Exclusive: Conservative groups forge early voting coalition built around new unity pledge

In the hotel where Abraham Lincoln kicked off his Civil War presidency, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. refined his most famous speech, dozens of organizations gathered this week with a common goal: to forge a historic coalition that would catapult conservatives to the forefront of early voting and election lawfare and expand their movement to Hispanics, Asians, union workers, and African-Americans fleeing the Democratic Party.

The meeting Wednesday at the Willard Intercontinental, organized by America First Works, a 501 c4 aligned with the America First Policy Institute and its founder, former Trump White House adviser Brooke Rollins, kicked off with a simple tool that decades ago united conservatives: a signed pledge.

The signatories and their organizations pledged to "work together as never before" and "harness our collective resources, wisdom, and energy to educate like never before, to grow our coalition with unwavering dedication, and to advance conservative solutions that will steer our country back toward prosperity, security, and freedom."

The three officials, John Bass, Jim DeHart and Jayne Howell, were all plucked from unrelated assignments and rushed into Afghanistan in the hours after Kabul fell to the Taliban due to their extensive experience in Afghanistan.

The transcripts of their interviews with the House Foreign Affairs Committee, obtained exclusively by CNN, are the latest tranche of more than a dozen interviews conducted by the committee as a key part of Republican Chairman Michael McCaul’s ongoing investigation into the 2021 evacuation that involved the deaths of 13 US service members.

All three of the officials rushed to Kabul in the days surrounding the Taliban’s seizure of the capital city, and dove into creating systems on the fly alongside the US military and with constantly-changing input on the ground and coming from DC.

Though officials who had worked at the embassy leading up to the evacuation told the committee investigators in separate interviews that planning for a NEO began in April or May, the officials who arrived in August said that no such clearly articulated plan served as their guide.

“I cannot emphasize enough to you that minute to minute, what was happening was changing,” Howell said in her July 2023 interview.

Senate aides say they expect Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) to immediately dismiss the impeachment charges against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas after the House impeachment managers present them next week.

One Senate GOP aide said Schumer is expected to schedule a vote on a motion to dismiss or a motion to table the charges.

Schumer also could refer the matter to a special evidentiary committee, but Senate Democrats worry that doing so could help validate the two counts against Mayorkas, which Schumer has panned as “a sham” and “absurd.”

"They said [the queer community] just accepts all of it, even though … isn't it illegal?" Emelia said.
