WikiLeaks' Assange extradition appeal to be heard next month

LONDON — WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s appeal against extradition from Britain to the United States will be heard next month, court officials in London said on Tuesday.

The Australian-born Assange, 52, is fighting extradition to the U.S. where he is wanted on 18 charges, nearly all under the Espionage Act, relating to WikiLeaks’ mass release of secret U.S. documents — the largest security breaches of their kind in U.S. military history.

His appeal will now be held on July 9-10, a spokesperson for Britain’s Judicial Office said.

Rudy Giuliani's lawyer says former NYC mayor may have a lung disease related to 9/11

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is suffering from a 'possible' lung disease related to 9/11, his lawyers have claimed in a new court filing.

Attorneys Gary C. Fischoff and Joan A. Keely, acting on behalf of Giuliani, alleged in a 17-page court filing that the politician's potential condition could limit his 'future health' and 'future earning capacity'.

It comes after creditors last month requested that a bankruptcy judge immediately appoint a trustee to oversee the ex-mayor's finances after he filed for bankruptcy in December 2023 amid mounting legal issues.

Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee said Monday that he would continue consideration of some pretrial motions in the Fulton County election interference case even as an appeals court mulls whether to disqualify District Attorney Fani Willis from the prosecution.

Last week, the Georgia Court of Appeals issued a stay on the lower court’s work until it decides whether Willis and her office should be removed from the case. But in a two-page order, McAfee said he believed he could continue working his way through pending requests from the six case defendants who are not participating in the appeal.

McAfee wrote that he “does not believe a complete stay is the most efficient course.” He added that any party who disagrees “is welcome to seek clarity directly with the Court of Appeals.”

Russian warships are practicing the use of high precision weapons in the Atlantic ocean, Russia's defence ministry said on Tuesday, putting the US on alert.

Vladimir Putin's most modern frigate Admiral Gorshkov, a hypersonic missile carrier, is accompanying nuclear submarine Kazan and two other naval vessels.

The drills involve hitting targets from a distance of more than 370 miles, Russia's defence ministry said in a statement, and follow an exercise in anti-aircraft fire.

All four vessels are set to arrive in Havana on Wednesday and will pass 25 miles from the coast of the United States on their journey, according to reports.

The flotilla is seen as sabre rattling by the Russian dictator at a time of deep tension over his war against Ukraine, and is reminiscent of the days of the Cold War and the Cuban missile crisis when the US faced off against Cuba and the USSR.
