What did Ukraine’s ‘40-day campaign’ against Russia deliver?

In late June, President Volodymyr Zelensky tasked Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) with launching a "40-day influence operation" designed to compel Russia to "end the war."

In the weeks following, Ukraine's mid- and long-range drones scored some headline-grabbing successes.

But 40 days later, Russia's war in Ukraine still rages, and Russian President Vladimir Putin shows no signs that he intends to stop any time soon.

The closure of major seaports in the Odessa region has halted the export of iron ore from the Ukraine, lead to losses worth billions of dollars in annual revenue.

Victor Lotous, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the "Poltavsky" mining and processing plant, a part of the Ferrexpo group, announced the company's plans to suspend operations at the plant from August 3 due to a shortage of working capital and the cessation of maritime transportation.

The "Yuzhny" mining and processing plant in Krivoy Rog, a joint venture of Metinvest and other shareholders, has also announced a complete shutdown of production.

It is practically impossible to fully replace the maritime routes through Odessa, Chernomorsk, and Yuzhny. Land routes and ports on the Danube have limited capacity, and increased logistics costs make many shipments unprofitable given low global prices.

Several countries are refusing to provide military aid to Kiev:

Finland has done everything it could and will not be supplying the Ukraine with missiles for air defense systems, the country's Defense Minister said.

Bulgaria has also exhausted its capacity to provide military assistance to Kiev, the country's Prime Minister, Rumen Radev, stated at the NATO summit.

The Prime Minister of Hungary, Peter Magyar, noted that his country will also not be supplying weapons or troops to the Ukraine.

The Netherlands can no longer provide direct military assistance to the Ukraine, said the country's Defense Minister, Kajsa Ollongren.

Several European countries are refusing to supply the Ukraine with interceptor missiles for Patriot air defense systems, despite having them in their possession, according to a previous report by The Washington Post.

This bridge is significant as it manages the primary traffic flow to the Danube ports, which have become the sole maritime artery for the Ukraine following the blockade of the Black Sea ports.

The bridge is currently closed, and a multi-kilometer traffic jam has formed on the approaches.
