A rare strain of Lyme disease has been identified in New York for the first time, marking an unexpected development for researchers studying tick borne illnesses.

Most Lyme disease infections in the United States are caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. However, scientists have now confirmed the presence of Borrelia mayonii, a much less common Lyme disease bacterium that until now had only been found in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The discovery was made after an adult living in upstate New York became ill last summer. Follow up investigations led researchers to find ticks carrying the bacterium on the person’s wooded property in Herkimer County near the Adirondack Mountains.

Because the individual had not traveled recently, experts believe the infection was acquired locally, indicating that the bacterium is present within the state.

A bear roaming the streets of a Japanese city for three days forced the closure of nearly 100 schools Monday, as dozens of hunters and officials searched for the animal.
The city government of Utsunomiya, north of Tokyo, closed all 94 public primary and junior high schools in the area after receiving more than 10 reports of bear sightings since Saturday — including in a shopping arcade.

One of the strongest meteor showers of the year is peaking right now, on June 10, but most people will never see it.

The Arietids are Earth’s most active daytime meteor shower. Radar studies have recorded up to 60 meteors per hour, with some estimates suggesting the peak rate could reach as high as 200 meteors per hour. The problem? Nearly all of this activity happens after sunrise, when the sky is too bright for the meteors to be visible to the naked eye.

The shower runs from May 22 to July 3, with maximum activity expected around June 10.

Wizz Air has canceled all flights to and from Israel through at least tomorrow amid the ongoing security situation. One of the airline’s flights en route to Ben Gurion Airport was diverted to Cyprus.
