AESA RADAR: THE TECHNOLOGY THAT CHANGED MODERN AIR COMBAT.

AESA, or Active Electronically Scanned Array, is one of the most advanced radar technologies used in modern fighter aircraft.

Unlike traditional mechanically scanned radars, which physically move an antenna to direct the radar beam, AESA radars use hundreds of individual transmit-receive modules to electronically steer the beam at extremely high speed.

This provides several major advantages:

• Faster target detection and tracking
• The ability to track multiple targets simultaneously
• Improved resistance to electronic jamming
• Greater reliability due to the radar’s distributed architecture
• The ability to perform multiple functions at the same time

An AESA radar can rapidly switch between air-to-air search, target tracking, ground mapping, and other functions without relying on mechanical movement.

If one radar module fails, the entire system can often continue operating with reduced performance rather than suffering a complete failure.

Modern AESA systems are also an important part of network-centric warfare. Radar data can be combined with information from infrared sensors, electronic warfare systems, other aircraft, and external platforms to create a more complete picture of the battlespace.

However, AESA does not automatically make an aircraft superior. Radar performance depends on many factors, including antenna size, power, software, signal processing, electronic warfare capabilities, and the target’s radar signature.

In modern air combat, the decisive advantage is often not who can fly the fastest.

It is who can detect, identify, track, and engage the enemy first.
