Trump Administration in Talks to Acquire Stakes in Quantum Computing Companies
The Trump administration is in negotiations to take equity stakes in several quantum computing firms, including IonQ, Rigetti Computing, and D-Wave Quantum, according to the Wall Street Journal.
This comes as part of a broader wave of strategic investments placing the U.S. government at the center of the AI and tech arms race.
The United States under the Trump administration now reportedly holds:
1. A potential stake in IonQ, D-Wave, and Rigetti
2. A 10% equity stake in Intel ($INTC)
3. A 15% stake in MP Materials ($MP)
4. A 10% stake in Lithium Americas ($LAC)
5. A 10% stake in Trilogy Metals ($TMQ)
According to analysts, every one of these investments is currently up by at least 80%, with some nearing 150%. The portfolio is now worth an estimated $17.2 billion — outperforming nearly all hedge funds.
And that total doesn’t yet include the soon-to-be-announced quantum computing deals

1. What’s known about MP Materials (Mountain Pass)
* Deposit type: carbonatite rare earth deposit
* Proven & probable reserves: about 29.7 million short tons of ore
* Average grade: ~**5.97% total rare earth oxides (TREO)**
* Contained REE oxides: ≈ 2.0 million short tons (≈1.8 Mt) of rare earth oxides
* Annual production: around 45,000 tonnes of REO concentrate per year
* So:
29.7 million tons × 5.97% = ~1.77 million tons (≈1.6 Mt) REE oxide equivalent
This is established, measured, mined material. MP is the reference point.
2. What’s known about Dateline’s Colosseum project
* Area: roughly 3.9 km × 2.2 km, about 8.5 km² (so, yes, much smaller footprint than Mountain Pass, which is ~40 km² if you include tailings & processing).
* Gold resource: 27.1 million tonnes @ 1.26 g/t Au → ≈ 1.1 million oz Au (this is confirmed and JORC-compliant).
* Rare earth data: no JORC or NI 43-101 estimate yet, only surface sampling and geophysical anomalies.
* Highest surface REE sample assays reported publicly: roughly 2,000–3,500 ppm total REE (≈ 0.2–0.35 % TREO).
* Gravity and MT models imply potential carbonatite or fenite bodies *hundreds of metres thick* below surface.
* Exploration geologists speculate (purely conceptual) that if a high-grade zone similar to Mountain Pass’s core exists at depth—say, 5–10 Mt @ 5–8 % TREO**—then contained REO could be **250,000–800,000 t TREO.
These numbers are not confirmed, but that’s the scale being hinted at in speculative analyses.
3. Why some people say “Dateline might have more REE even if smaller”
They mean this:
* Mountain Pass has a larger area but an average grade of ~6% TREO.
* If Colosseum, though smaller, eventually proves one or more high-grade lenses (say 10–15% TREO) or multiple stacked ore bodies, the contained rare earth oxides (tonnage × grade) could theoretically rival or exceed MP’s total, even though the mine area is smaller.
Example calculation:
* Hypothetical Colosseum high-grade body: 10 Mt × 10 % TREO = 1 Mt TREO.
* MP Materials: ~30 Mt × 6 % = 1.8 Mt TREO.
→ Still smaller, but in the same order of magnitude.
If Colosseum ultimately hosts *several* such bodies, total contained REO could surpass MP’s.
4. Reality check
* So far, no drill-confirmed tonnage or grades support that scale at Colosseum.
* The “Dateline might have more” idea is based on geophysical anomalies and geological analogy, not measured resources.
* Until Dateline publishes a resource statement with numbers like “X Mt @ Y % TREO,” comparisons to MP remain theoretical.
In short:
Mountain Pass = ~30 Mt ore @ 6% TREO (≈1.8 Mt REE confirmed)
Colosseum = 0 Mt ore @ unknown % TREO (0 Mt REE confirmed, 0.25–0.8 Mt REE speculative if future drilling matches optimism)

1. Current stage (as of October 2025)
* Dateline has completed gravity and magnetotelluric (MT) geophysical surveys and surface geochemical sampling around the Colosseum site.
* The company has publicly said those data sets identified multiple REE target zones that will guide Phase 1 drilling.
* That drilling program — aimed at confirming rare earth mineralization at depth — is expected to begin in Q4 2025 (late 2025).
* After drilling, they’ll need to complete assay testing, geological modeling, and resource estimation, which are separate steps.
2. Typical timeline to a JORC / NI 43-101 resource
If drilling starts late 2025, then:
1. Drilling & sampling: 3–6 months (Q4 2025–Q1 2026)
2. Lab assays & interpretation: 2–4 months (Q2 2026)
3. Modeling and independent audit (JORC / NI 43-101): another 2–3 months
→ Earliest realistic publication: mid- to late 2026, assuming no delays.
3. What Dateline itself has said
In its most recent investor update (August 2025), Dateline stated it plans to:
* “Commence the first REE-focused drill program at Colosseum in Q4 2025.”
* “Aim to release a maiden JORC-compliant REE resource as soon as results are verified.”
No exact date given, but context implies sometime in 2026 if drilling and assays proceed normally.

US Rare Earths Champion Says Pentagon Deal Not Easily Replicable
MP Materials Corp., the US rare earths producer that’s received government investment to support construction of domestic capacity, is warning the unprecedented move won’t be easily repeated for other companies.
