BURLINGTON, Iowa According to officials, the Burlington FD was called to the Comfort Suites on 1780 Stonegate Center Dr around 5:05 a.m. on Sat, Aug. 15, after fire alarms activated. Crews found that the eastern portion of the building's second-story section had collapsed over its ballroom. The collapse was isolated and did not impact the 3-story hotel portion of the building, allowing all 122 occupants to be safely evacuated. The building will be unoccupied until all fire alarms, sprinklers, electrical functions and other systems are restored. Fire officials said the property owners are hiring engineers to examine the structure and deduce the collapse's impact. The collapse affected approx 18,000 square feet of the building's total 41,000 square feet of space. Approx 7,000 square feet collapsed.
