The FDA has authorised Aletta, a device from Dutch company Vitestro that finds a vein, inserts the needle and fills the tubes without a human touching the patient. It uses near infrared light to spot the vein, then ultrasound and Doppler to measure its depth and confirm it is not an artery, before an arm places the needle with sub millimetre precision. In a 1,633 patient trial published in Clinical Chemistry, it hit the vein on the first attempt 94.5% of the time.
