Novichok agents are a deadly group of fourth-generation, synthetic organophosphate nerve agents developed by the Soviet Union during the 1970s and 1980s.
Mechanism of Action and Toxicity
Inhibition: Novichoks act as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, blocking the enzyme that breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.
Nervous System Overload: This causes continuous stimulation of the nervous system, leading to rapid bodily collapse, pinpoint pupils, excessive salivation, convulsions, and respiratory failure.
Potency: Some variants, such as A-230, are estimated to be five to eight times more toxic than VX gas.
Form: They can be deployed as liquids, aerosols, or binary agents (stored as two separate, less harmful chemicals that mix to form the poison).
