HHS Secretary Bobby Kennedy says the FDA’s GRAS loophole is being closed, accusing the food industry of exploiting it to “self-affirm” ingredients without FDA safety review. Kennedy claimed the U.S. has between 4,000 and 12,000 food ingredients, compared with roughly 400 in Europe, and accused private interests of capturing the regulatory system. “We are now closing the GRAS loophole,” Kennedy said.
