The avalanche came down on the evening of September 6 from the slopes of Mount Mizhirgi in the Bezengi Gorge, hitting a group of 33 people. According to the latest figures from Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry, 11 climbers were killed, six were injured and hospitalized, and another six remain missing. Ten people managed to descend on their own.
Search and rescue operations are continuing, but difficult terrain, bad weather, and the ongoing avalanche risk are complicating the effort.
