An online petition has been started calling for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani not to attend the 25th 9/11 remembrance ceremony. As of Tuesday morning, there were more than 23,000 signatures on the petition.
"We felt that having Mamdani there would show a disrespect to our family members because of the people he supports," 9/11 widower Giovanni Galante said.
The 9/11 Memorial & Museum said, in part, "We have intentionally worked to keep the commemoration free of politics. Government officials from across the political spectrum have attended the ceremony simply to bear witness."

More than 50 people were injured after a powerful earthquake in Japan, according to media reports.
Initially, a 7.1-magnitude quake was recorded in the region, after which a tsunami warning was issued. Less than an hour later, another earthquake struck—with a magnitude of 6.1.
As a result, roads and some homes were damaged. The Japanese government has established a crisis management center. About 30 aftershocks were recorded within two hours of the main quake.
Meteorologists warn that more strong earthquakes are possible in the region over the course of the week.
