At the University of Georgia’s veterinary teaching hospital, aspiring animal doctors learn to minister to a menagerie: dogs with dermatitis, horses with colic and now, hundreds of thousands of honeybees.

Students examined more than a dozen hives, holding the wax combs up to the sun and searching for signs of disease: the stunted wings, discolored larvae or minuscule mites that can spell serious trouble for the nation’s bees and, by extension, its food supply.

The honeybee medicine program at the University of Georgia is part of a nascent but growing effort to enlist veterinarians in the fight, as its colonies are plagued by parasites and pathogens and weakened by climate change, pesticides and malnutrition.

China has cut its U.S. Treasury holdings by about $657 billion, from a peak of $1.316 trillion in May 2013 to roughly $659.3 billion in May 2026—a decline of about 50%. Holdings briefly fell to $651.1 billion, the lowest since 2008, while the PBOC continued adding gold for a 20th consecutive month, signaling a long-term diversification of China’s foreign reserves away from U.S. government debt.

That's why the U.S. is helping Japan with its exchange rate. Japan owns a large portion of U.S. Treasuries and had started selling them to support its currency. The U.S. needs people to buy its debt to finance its roughly $2 trillion annual deficit, while also helping keep its roughly $1 trillion annual interest burden from rising further.

That's what the Chinese professor was saying, and that's why he thinks the U.S. will use Apple and Amazon to help Chinese people buy stablecoins and support demand for U.S. Treasury debt, because stablecoins like Tether and USDC are backed by U.S. Treasuries.

If a Chinese person buys $1 of USDC, they are technically buying U.S. Treasuries indirectly, so at scale this could create additional demand for U.S. government debt and help the U.S. finance its roughly $2 trillion annual deficit.
