🇰🇷🇰🇵⚡️ — South Korean President Proposes Talks with North Korea to End the War

Lee Jae-myung called for abandoning intentions to threaten each other and initiating negotiations to end the conflict, according to Yonhap.

"Let us abandon intentions to threaten each other and begin negotiations to end this protracted war," the president said at a ceremony commemorating the anniversary of Korea's liberation.

🇺🇸⚡️ — The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) published a map of the Middle East that included the Gaza Strip and the West Bank as part of the territory of Israel.

However, the map was later replaced, and now those territories are not delineated as a single region.

🇺🇸🏁⚡️ — According to Bloomberg, the US is asking NATO allies to provide not only information about their defense spending, but also details about their political orientation toward the Trump administration, as part of a review of the American military presence in Europe.

A questionnaire sent to NATO members includes questions about whether governments have publicly supported US foreign policy, restricted American military access to their bases, purchased products from US defense companies, or opposed procurement rules that favor European suppliers.

The questionnaire specifically mentions restrictions imposed by allies on US operations in the Middle East and asks whether these restrictions could be reduced or lifted.

This survey comes as Washington is considering a significant reduction of US troops and military capabilities in Europe, and the review is expected to be completed by December.

According to reports, allies view these questions as an attempt to tie the security guarantees provided by the US to political loyalty, which may mark a significant departure from the traditional NATO model, where collective defense was upheld despite political disagreements among alliance members.

🇺🇸🇰🇷🇰🇵⚡️ — Joint U.S.–South Korean military exercises began on August 17 and will run through August 27. The drills will include joint operations aimed at improving the allies’ combat readiness.

South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesman Jang Do-young said the allies will jointly “assess the country’s military capabilities” during the exercises.

However, on Sunday evening, the U.S. president said he was “not happy” with US participation “based on my very good relationship with Kim Jong Un”. He added that they were costly and “send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile, to a country that, as long as Donald J Trump has been president, has been unthreatening and respectful”.

Trump added that it was too late to cancel the drills so he had ordered the defence secretary, Pete Hegseth, to “substantially reduce” them. He also said South Korea had refused to help in the “denuclearisation of the Islamic republic of Iran”.

On August 14, KCNA published a statement from a North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesperson, who described the upcoming Ulchi Freedom Shield exercises as “aggressive.”
