Bees are collapsing in Castlemaine and across Victoria. A local just sent me this photo of their dead hive, and several others are reporting the same. I believe Israeli acute paralysis virus, or IAPV, is the culprit. This RNA virus spreads through the hive via food and the varroa mite. It infects bees at every stage, from eggs to queens, and disrupts their energy production and nervous system. Infected bees shiver, become disoriented, and paralyze. They crawl out of the hive or die just outside, often with darkened bodies and hair loss. This rapid collapse is devastating colonies. The pressure from the new varroa mite, now resistant to synthetic miticides, is making things worse. Save the Bees Australia is tracking this closely

The FDA has authorised Aletta, a device from Dutch company Vitestro that finds a vein, inserts the needle and fills the tubes without a human touching the patient. It uses near infrared light to spot the vein, then ultrasound and Doppler to measure its depth and confirm it is not an artery, before an arm places the needle with sub millimetre precision. In a 1,633 patient trial published in Clinical Chemistry, it hit the vein on the first attempt 94.5% of the time.
