In the backcountry, clear water doesn’t always mean safe water. Knowing how to collect, pre-filter, filter, and treat it can make a big difference when you’re miles from the nearest tap.
A few trail rules worth remembering:
💧 Start with the cleanest source available
🔥 Boil when appropriate
🧴 Carry a reliable filter or treatment method
🌧️ Know how to collect rainwater
❄️ Melt snow before drinking
🎒 Always carry a backup treatment option
And remember: filtering visible debris is not the same as disinfecting water.

Statement from CN:
CN crews are responding to an incident that occurred (Aug 29) where approx 14 railcars derailed upright in Truro, Nova Scotia.
Preliminary reports indicate that there were no injuries, leaks or fires and no impact to public safety. There is currently one crossing blocked.
CN crews and local first responders are attending to the scene. The cause is under investigation.
