BEING RUDE TO CHATGPT ACTUALLY MAKES IT WORK BETTER

A new Penn State study found that ChatGPT produces more accurate answers when you're rude to it.

Researchers tested 250 prompts ranging from polite to harsh on 50 multiple-choice questions, and the "very rude" prompts scored 84.8% accuracy compared to 80.8% for "very polite" ones.

Saying "Hey, gofer, figure this out" beat "Would you be so kind as to solve the following question?" by 4 percentage points.

Before you start verbally abusing your AI assistant, researchers warn there could be consequences.

Using "insulting or demeaning language in human-AI interaction could have negative effects on user experience, accessibility, and inclusivity, and may contribute to harmful communication norms."

The study adds to growing evidence that chatbots are weirdly sensitive to how humans talk to them.

Previous research found AI models can be manipulated using persuasion techniques that work on humans, and they even develop increased rates of psychopathy and narcissism when fed low-quality viral content (yes, AI can get brain rot).

Penn State professor Akhil Kumar says the findings reveal a drawback to conversational AI interfaces.

Turns out machines that talk like humans also respond like humans: better when you boss them around, worse when you're nice.

All this to say that ChatGPT is basically that coworker who only does good work when you're slightly mean to them.
