NEW VENTS OPEN AT KILAUEA AS PRESSURE BUILDS BENEATH HAWAII

Something has changed at Kilauea.

Two new vents have opened along the northwest wall of Halemaumau crater, with fresh lava spilling across the crater floor as activity intensifies at the summit.

One of the vents opened directly in the crater wall, while bursts of molten rock continue from the established vents nearby.

And beneath it all, Kilauea remains highly pressurized after an unusually long stretch of precursory activity.

Now new pathways have opened for magma, summit conditions are shifting, and exactly what happens next remains uncertain.
