🇦🇷 Major blackout hits northern Buenos Aires — real, with a mundane cause, and no, not UFOs

A large blackout struck the northern corridor of Buenos Aires and parts of Greater Buenos Aires on Saturday night, Sept. 19, beginning around 8–9 PM. Affected neighborhoods included Palermo, Belgrano, Recoleta, Villa Urquiza, Núñez, Coghlan and Saavedra, plus Vicente López and San Isidro in the province. Distributor Edesur reported roughly 86,000 customers without power (rising through the night), with some reports of ~300,000 users affected, impacting close to a million people. Traffic lights went dark, causing gridlock, and the utilities' complaint portals crashed under the load. Power began returning in parts after about 20 minutes. THE CAUSE — technical, not extraterrestrial: Per Argentina's grid-movement body (SACME), the failure originated in Edenor's network and cascaded to an Edesur substation, knocking out roughly 11% of Edenor's metropolitan demand. This is a grid fault — the kind Buenos Aires suffers periodically, given Argentina's notoriously strained electrical infrastructure. There is no mystery here.

ON THE "UFO SIGHTINGS" CLAIM — ignore it: The reports of "flying objects" circulating with this blackout appear in no news source and are a classic conspiracy graft — take a real, boring infrastructure failure and bolt on UFOs to make it go viral. The accompanying "phone and internet failures" have an equally dull explanation: when the power drops, local cell towers and Wi-Fi go down with it, and the utilities' websites collapsed from the flood of complaints. It's the same playbook as the "radar anomaly = secret weapon" hoaxes — a mundane event dressed up as the paranormal. The blackout is real and worth reporting; the flying objects are not. When the lights go out in a city with a fragile grid, the answer is the grid — every time.
