🌞 Daily Solar Activity Update - August 17, 2025 🌞

Hey space enthusiasts! The Sun's in a serene phase today, but an incoming cosmic twist could liven things up tomorrow—perfect for planning your aurora chase!

Sunspot Number: 123 – Regions holding steady but quiet overall.

Recent Flares: C1-class peaked at 0741 UT today; C3-class over the last 24 hours.

Flare Odds: 20% for M-class, 1% for X-class in the next day. 💥

Geomagnetic Status: Whisper-quiet at Kp 1.67, with a 24-hour max of 2.00.

Aurora Outlook: Watch Aug 18—a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) may spark G1-class storms and dazzling high-latitude lights! 🌌

Cosmic Rays: Dipping very low at -6.0% below average, unchanged recently.

Sky Highlights: Noctilucent clouds continue their northern glow, captured in Finland on Aug 11. T CrB nova steady at mag 9.7—eruption eyed for Nov 10 or mid-next June! Plus, cosmic ray levels hint at solar max influences on our atmosphere.

Calm now, but the space weather wheel turns. What's your prediction for tomorrow's storms?

Solar activity has been elevated.
At the same time, people are reporting cellular glitches, app freezing, and signal issues.

Not jumping to conclusions — just watching the overlap.
Anyone else experiencing this?

A deep gash in the sun’s atmosphere (coronal hole) has doubled in size since yesterday!

In just 24 hours it has darkened and grown exponentially in overall size.

High speed solar wind exiting this huge opening wil be earth directed as it sits on the equator of the sun.

We will continue to monitor as this is an evolving event.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA UNDER INTENSE EARTHQUAKE SWARM

An unusually active earthquake swarm continues in Southern California following yesterday’s M4.9 super-shallow earthquake, which struck at just about one mile deep.

In the past 24 hours, this area has produced 205 aftershocks, averaging 8–9 earthquakes per hour, keeping the region in a constant state of motion.

What’s notable is the timing. This surge in seismic activity is unfolding during a period of elevated solar activity and recent Schumann Resonance disturbances, conditions many have been watching closely as both Earth and space influences remain highly active.

While earthquakes are driven by tectonic forces, spikes like this often raise questions when multiple natural processes are active at the same time.

This remains a very busy and closely watched area.

23 M-Class Flares. 3 X-Class Flares. 40 Hours.

Hyper-active sunspot AR 4366 has entered an intense phase.

In just 40 hours, this single region has produced:
• 23 separate M-class flares
• 3 powerful X-class flares

Here’s the region up close, with Earth added for scale 🌎

So far, no Earth-directed CME has followed — but the region remains magnetically unstable and highly active.

Clusters like this don’t happen in isolation.
They’re often part of a broader buildup, not a single release.

During heightened solar activity, some people report noticing things like disrupted sleep, pressure sensations, ringing ears, fatigue, or feeling “off.” Others notice nothing at all.

Anyone else noticing this lately?

Another powerful solar flare has erupted from sunspot 4366, this time an X-4.2!

Solar flares are strong bursts of radiation that originate from very magnetically complex regions on the surface of the sun. They can produce in some cases large coronal mass ejections and if earth directed can interfere with earth orbiting satellites, GPS systems, communications systems and sensitive electronics.

We are waiting for more data to see if this event has an earth directed component.
