The colonists of Roanoke vanished between August of 1587 and August of 1590. One hundred fifteen men, women, children. The governor returned to find the houses dismantled, gardens overgrown, the word CROATOAN carved on a palisade post. No bodies. No graves. No signs of struggle. The Croatan tribe denied knowledge. The case has remained open for four centuries. Last spring an archaeologist scanning the dig site with ground penetrating radar finds a chamber two meters down. Inside, one hundred fifteen pairs of shoes arranged in concentric circles. The shoes face inward. Something stood in the center.

The Inuit village on the shore of Lake Anjikuni had thirty people. Trappers crossed through every winter. In November of 1930 a man named Joe Labelle reached the village and called out. No answer. The huts stood. The fires were warm. Caribou stew steamed in iron pots. Rifles leaned against the walls. The sled dogs lay frozen in their harnesses, mouths open, ribs through the fur. The ancestral graves at the edge of the village were dug up. The bodies were gone. The Mounties closed the file in 1931. Last winter a satellite over the lake photographs new smoke. The huts still stand. Something is cooking.
