CONCORD, New Hampshire Concord firefighters investigated an explosion at an underground utility junction on Centre Street Friday night. Around 6:30 p.m., Capital Fire Alarm began receiving reports about a smoking underground utility junction between North State and North Main streets, on the south side of Centre. When firefighters arrived, they found the top of the junction blown off and several feet away, with soot and dirt around the area, including the sidewalk and the street. They inspected the area, found that it was no longer burning, and cordoned off the scene. Sanquelim, India A major explosion at the Nhavele-Sanquelim power substation in the early hours of Friday severely disrupted electricity supply in Sanquelim and several nearby villages in Bicholim taluka.   According to officials, the blast destroyed the ‘bus bars’ — large conductors used to transmit power within the substation. The intense fire also damaged the insulators, while transformer oil caught fire and was completely burnt, leaving the entire substation non-functional and causing a widespread power outage in the area.   Officials said their priority is to restore electricity supply to residential areas at the earliest. However, due to the extent of the damage caused by the explosion and fire, power supply remained disrupted in Sakhali and several nearby villages. HUNTING VALLEY, Ohio Effective Friday (May 15), engineers with the Cuyahoga County Department of Public Works ordered the immediate and indefinite closure of the Fairmount Boulevard bridge for safety repairs. Officials determined a hard closure was needed, with no local traffic between Chagrin River Road and County Line Road due to failure of bridge supports. Police Chief Mike Cannon said county engineers found “missing concrete supports that could elevate the risk of cars or trucks crashing through the bridge” at certain points of impact. Bwana Mkubwa, Zambia A shunt train carrying coal derailed and overturned near Ndola on Friday afternoon, and 2 people are feared trapped under the wagons. Zambia Railways Limited public relations manager Sombe Ng’onga in a statement to Mwebantu said preliminary reports indicate that the 2 victims were walking within the railway reserve strip at the time of the accident. She said the incident occurred about 3 p.m. at Bwana Mkubwa. Locomotive 4346 and 11 coal wagons experienced a runaway movement toward Ndola before derailing and overturning between Bwana Mkubwa and Ndola Railway Station, near Itawa Bridge. Mrs Ng’onga added that rescue and recovery operations are underway.
