When they went out to check, they saw flames rising up accompanied by a burning smell. People around joined the on-site fire fighting force to put out the fire, however, the flames flared up high, causing initial firefighting to fail. Upon receiving the news, the Fire and Rescue Team of Area 12 (PC07) was present at the scene and deployed fire fighting operations. After about 20 minutes of firefighting, the fire was completely extinguished. WESTERLY, Rhode Island One person was taken to the hospital after a small plane crashed on Monday in Westerly, RI. Police said it appeared the plane crashed short of the runway at Westerly State Airport. Sky5 flew over the area and saw the damaged fuselage near the trees, less than half-a-mile from the runway. The FAA said the plane involved was a Cessna C172 and that only the pilot was on board.
