PhD positions in meta-materials and computational mechanics at Kansas State University

Fully funded PhD positions in the area of meta-materials, computational mechanics and wave propagation available in the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Kansas State University. Research will be in topics related to the mechanics of metamaterials and the mechanics of amorphous or granular media.

We are a new group investigating fundamental and exotic wave phenomena in artificially engineered structures for potential applications in energy harvesting, impact mitigation, communications, damage detection, tunable and adaptive machines. The work will be a combination of theory, simulation and experiments focused on investigating physical phenomena for potential engineering applications.

Composite components with bio-inspired micro-structures: Exploiting improved damage tolerance


Project Description
Applications are invited for a Ph.D. studentship in the Department of Aeronautics. The successful candidate will have the opportunity of working with a dedicated team involving various academics within a larger project with Rolls-Royce. The successful candidate will have the exciting opportunity to interact closely with Rolls-Royce during this project.

The project aims to develop original and improved CFRP solutions to implement alternative release planes in CFRP fan blades and to improve the energy dissipation in CFRP containment casings during blade-off events. This will be achieved by manipulating the microstructure of the CFRP to achieve greater damage tolerance and bespoke translaminar fracture properties at component level.

Faculty position openings at Stony Brook University

The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University has started a search for 3 tenure-track faculty positions at the assistant professor or associate professor level with a desired start date of September 2020. We seek to fill the positions (one each) in the following areas:

1. Geotechnical Engineering. For this position, we are primarily interested in applicants who have expertise in energy geotechnics and coastal geotechnics. Also of interest is environmental geotechnics.

2. Materials Engineering. Desired research focus for materials engineering candidates is on complex and multi-functional materials. Additional areas of interest are micro- and nano-engineered materials and additive manufacturing.

3. Cyber-physical Systems. For the position in cyber-physical systems, expertise is desired on data science and analytics (e.g., artificial intelligence and machine learning) in support of smart cities and civil infrastructure systems.

In addition to the noted areas of expertise, of high importance is the candidates’ intellectual depth and promise in research and teaching. Individuals with the ability to conduct multidisciplinary research through their own endeavors, as well as through collaborations within and outside the department, will be encouraged to apply.
