I’m not American so I didn’t get to vote in last week’s presidential election, but since American politics tends to impact the rest of the world irrespective of who’s in office, I feel entitled to offer my view of how the next four years might play out.
I’m not going to get too geopolitical, but I worry that a U.S. that’s fully committed to killing offshore wind projects in favor of ‘drill baby drill’ will see a significant slowdown in its efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change. On the flip side, Trump’s support of nuclear energy could break through America’s lingering fears of a Three Mile Island redux and reduce reliance on dirtier energy sources to power the U.S. electricity grid.
I also worry about Trump’s tariff threats and the inevitable retaliatory tariffs imposed by other nations. Certain sectors with Trump’s phone on speed-dial might be able to secure exemptions from these tariffs but overall, there will almost certainly be a global trade slowdown, something the world really doesn’t need right now.
I’m also concerned about the triumphalism surging through the U.S. ‘crypto’ sector after their unprecedented campaign finance spending elected a number of pro-crypto politicians and defeated some notable critics. The net result will be a significant turnaround in how D.C. views digital assets, with or without the first ‘crypto president’ in the White House.
bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
With senior leadership at several U.S. crypto exchanges publicly claiming a key role in this political shift—and threatening other anti-crypto politicians with similar attacks in 2026 if they don’t play ball—there’s a very real sense that these operators feel the gloves are off, that they can both ask for and get nearly everything they want.
The first thing they want, and Trump has promised to do this ‘on day one,’ is a new head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, someone who will end all the prosecutions and shrug when exchanges want to list utility-free tokens that are clearly unregistered securities.
The new freedom to list every new memecoin under the sun will pad the crypto casinos’ bottom line—particularly if the exchanges have a financial stake in the ‘projects’ behind these tokens—but will cost tens of thousands of customers untold millions as the value of these pointless tokens follows their traditional rapid rise and even swifter fall. Yes, freedom to choose means freedom to fail, but snake oil is snake oil, even when it’s digital.
Next will be permission to offer heavily leveraged crypto derivative products stateside, along with greater access to the traditional banking system. Their ultimate goal is having the freedom to engage in extremely risky practices that promise massive returns if successful, and the guarantee of a government backstop should their bets turn out to be losers. Think the Federal Reserve riding to the rescue of Silicon Valley Bank (and stablecoin issuer Circle) in 2023, but on a much wider scale. Privatize the profit, socialize the risk, lather, rinse, repeat.
ayre.group/news/articles-…
Exchange execs are already tweeting FOMO-inducing stats showing renewed interest in token trading, urging retail traders to place their bets and ride this rocket all the way to the moon. Retail fees may be the exchanges’ bread-and-butter, but bread-and-butter is all these traders will be eating for a long time if they buy into these FOMO fallacies.
For people like myself, who support projects based on enterprise blockchain technology’s potential as an unparalleled data management platform, the U.S. election means an even tougher job of cutting through the ‘get rich quick’ noise. But cut through it we shall, because the future of enterprise blockchain tech doesn’t depend on any individual politician or party. When the artificial FOMO fuel is gone and the ‘crypto’ rocket crashes back to earth, enterprise blockchain will still be here, ready, willing and able.

The world is in a very uncertain place right now, and everyone’s going to need a little help to make sense of things and muddle our way through somehow.
Let me state upfront that I’m no music expert. Like everyone else, I had my favourite bands and albums growing up but once I left school I was just too consumed by business to have my finger on the pulse of what’s going on.
But everybody knows the song One by U2. I remember having dinner with this girl who was a huge U2 fan and she was talking about the song’s lyrics that say “we get to carry each other.” She said she’d read an interview in which Bono clarified that helping someone when they need it most wasn’t so much an obligation, rather a recognition that someday it might be you who needs that helping hand, so all you’re really doing is paying it forward.
I tracked down that interview, and he says: “I'm still disappointed when people hear the chorus line as 'got to' rather than 'we get to carry each other.' Like it or not, the only way out of here is if I give you a leg up the wall and you pull me after you.”
There’s no question that a lot of people are financially hurting right now. Inflation may have slowed but the costs of basic necessities remain well above pre-pandemic levels. People are having to make tough choices about what they can afford to do now and what can be put off until later or abandoned entirely. Stress levels are being pushed to unhealthy levels, taking a toll on one’s mental, physical and emotional state.
I’ve spoken often of the advice I got from my dad when I was a kid about the idea of giving something back—that people who are fortunate enough to enjoy success should acknowledge that few successful people get where they are without some help along the way. The help you offer someone today could pay far greater dividends down the road as they find their own success and find themselves in a position to help someone else who’s still struggling to find their footing.
Sometimes the help you offer can literally be lifesaving. Recently, my Foundation was able to help a Guyanese national in Antigua struggling with some serious medical issues get the assistance he needed and fly him back to Guyana so he can continue receiving the care he needs. antiguaobserver.com/family-express…
A week ago, my helicopter service CalvinAir (nice name, huh?) played a pivotal role in the successful search for a pair of fishermen whose boat overturned off Antigua’s shore. caribbean.loopnews.com/content/fisher…
Stories like this make me feel grateful that my team is able to help in moments where it seems all hope is lost. It gets you thinking about this being part of some bigger plan, like my business success was just the means of putting me in a position where I’m able to offer these sorts of solutions. I’m not a believer in any sky gods but I do believe we are all connected to some degree and I’m just trying to do my part.
I realize not everyone can pay someone’s medical bills or commandeer a helicopter on a moment’s notice. I also know some of you might think I’m showing off by spotlighting these recent events. Honestly, I don’t care and neither do the people that we were able to help. It’s easy to stand on the sidelines and criticize. I’m urging the critics to come off the sidelines and get in the game.
Regardless of your financial situation, everyone knows someone worse off than themselves. You don’t have to be their lifesaver, just someone who steps up at the right moment. Maybe you can offer to do some grocery shopping for the old man or woman who lives down the hall so they don’t have to lug the stuff home. Maybe you can shovel someone’s sidewalk so they don’t trip and fall and end up in hospital. Maybe look after someone’s kids or their dog, cat or gecko during an unplanned crisis. Small acts of kindness/generosity are infectious, so I urge you to forget all those lessons we learned during the pandemic and go infect someone ASAP.
The bottom line is we’re all in this together. If we don’t look out for each other, who will?

History may not repeat itself, but it often rhymes. And MicroStrategy’s bid to inflate BTC’s fiat value is a dodgy limerick with a lousy punchline.
MicroStrategy (MSTR) keeps raising billions by taking on debt and issuing new shares, all to buy more BTC. It holds more than 2% of the 21 million BTC that will ever be issued, but that figure is likely higher given how much BTC is estimated to be permanently ‘lost.’
microstrategy.com/press/microstr…
Some have compared MSTR founder Michael Saylor to the Hunt brothers who tried to corner the silver market in the late-70s. The Hunts ultimately controlled around one-third of the silver supply not controlled by the world’s governments.
britannica.com/topic/Silver-T…
But there are notable differences, including the fact that—unlike BTC—silver has actual use cases, and not just making baubles or pricey utensils. For instance, the Manhattan Project required nearly 15,000 tons of silver to build the first atomic bomb.
But the ‘digital gold’ that is BTC is good only for financial speculation. Saylor himself trashes the idea that BTC could act as a currency, a direct rebuke of the Bitcoin white paper’s definition of ‘peer-to-peer electronic cash.’
youtu.be/R87vco0jHvo?si…
Another difference: the Hunts bought their silver in the shadows, while MSTR can’t be more public. As 2024 drew to a close, they announced BTC buys every Monday for two months straight—and kept going in 2025—while also revealing plans to raise up to $42 billion so they could keep buying.
Saylor’s account on this platform is a mix of BTC-themed verbal bafflegab and AI-generated Saylor-as-BTC-hero visuals. All of this is centered around the same message: buy BTC, buy it now and buy as much as you can.
There’s a hint of desperation in Saylor’s messianic messaging—he seems less interested in ensuring that people he’ll never meet enjoy financial success and more like he wants other people to assume the role of buying BTC so he doesn’t have to shoulder this load all by himself.
A new JPMorgan report says MSTR accounted for 28% of total capital inflow into ‘crypto’ markets in 2024. Considering MSTR’s focus is solely on BTC, its influence on that particular token’s price would be even greater.
MSTR’s contribution to BTC’s price surge is greater still when you consider the number of people who don’t follow ‘crypto’ news all that closely but saw BTC’s price rising due to MSTR’s constant buying and caught the FOMO (fear of missing out) fever.
Keep that in mind every time you read some breathless report on BTC’s rising price, because without Saylor, there’d have been no headlines.
Saylor continues to beat the drum for other companies to follow MSTR’s lead. Some, mostly money-losing companies, including some prominent BTC block reward miners, have complied.
But Microsoft shareholders near-unanimously rejected the idea, despite Saylor making a personal pitch, because the company is highly profitable without these high-risk gimmicks, thank you very much.
bnnbloomberg.ca/business/compa…
Saylor has also been urging the U.S. government to follow MSTR’s lead, because it’s the only domestic entity with enough juice to relieve MSTR of its BTC-buying burden. Saylor paid a visit to Mar-a-Lago last week, presumably to pitch the president-elect on this subject.
Trump is hopefully also getting advice from those with less to lose should BTC fail to sustain its fiat gains. He needs to hear that blockchains were intended as transaction platforms—financial, data, whatever—not vaults for digital gold bricks.
bsvblockchain.org
The Hunt brothers’ silver play ended in failure (and eventual bankruptcy), while MSTR is (for the moment) enjoying record-high share prices. Saylor has taken full advantage of the surge, selling nearly $411 million worth of his MSTR shares last year.

The Hunt brothers’ silver play ended in failure (and eventual bankruptcy), while MSTR is (for the moment) enjoying record-high share prices. Saylor has taken full advantage of the surge, selling nearly $411 million worth of his MSTR shares last year.

**Bitcoin SV (BSV)**, short for **Bitcoin Satoshi Vision**, is a cryptocurrency that emerged from a hard fork of Bitcoin Cash (BCH) in November 2018. It was created to fulfill the original vision of Bitcoin as outlined in Satoshi Nakamoto's whitepaper.

America’s new government is studying ways to make its future operations more efficient but both the public and private sectors can benefit from enterprise blockchain technology solutions that are available in the here and now.
An executive order issued by President Trump says the Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been given until July 4, 2026 to recommend ways to modernize “federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity.”
This is a more narrow focus for DOGE than originally envisioned, but it makes sense given Musk’s background as a tech titan with an interest in blockchain technology. DOGE is now reportedly exploring how blockchain might help improve the federal bureaucracy.
Musk is said to have had talks with representatives of several public blockchains (no names provided). Transparency in federal spending, payment systems, securing data and property management are reportedly among the potential areas in which blockchain tech might be applied.
DOGE issued a public call for suggestions on how they should proceed, and I think considering blockchain’s role is a good idea. But I would caution them to consider each blockchain’s capacity to do what it claims, because ‘efficiency’ requires both capability and reliability.
For instance, the two Trump family memecoins were released on Solana, a network with a reputation for having to shut down and reboot when traffic gets too demanding. The Trump coin volume nearly sank Solana again, but it just managed to avoid flicking the on-off switch. This time.
In my opinion, priority should be given to blockchains that are not only more robust but which prioritize utility over financial speculation; blockchains that are already offering the kind of efficiency solutions DOGE wants to achieve.
Take the inefficiencies plaguing the supply chain. In the UK alone, £12 billion of revenue is lost annually to these inefficiencies. The global figure is obviously many multiples of that. Those wasted billions can and should be reclaimed and reallocated to more productive uses.
Blockchain solutions exist to verify data quickly and accurately across multiple touchpoints. Networks capable of handling both the volume of transactions and the reams of data that global shipping demands are already deploying these solutions.
Trust will be increased due to inalterable record-keeping (which applies to all data needs, not just supply chains). Compliance costs will come down because transactions will be both secure and auditable. Fraud is reduced by making every step along a product’s journey visible and verifiable.
As for DOGE’s reported interested in blockchain-based payments, efficiency must walk hand in hand with economy. A blockchain-based system needs to be capable of handling significant transaction volume at fee levels that don’t match or even exceed current costs.
DOGE says it will be public about its plans, and transparency is the hallmark of public blockchains. But if efficiency is the goal, pick the blockchain that can handle the job NOW, not a blockchain that merely has aspirations to achieve this capacity and durability three iterations down the road.
If anyone at DOGE is interested in discussing this further, let’s talk.

The UK government is trying to become a more digital state and blockchain can help ensure data remains secure and accessible only by those who should have access, which will give citizens greater confidence to trust the government going forward.
The UK recently revealed additional details of its ‘blueprint for modern digital government,’ first announced last year, regarding the introduction of digital IDs that the government hopes will streamline routine processes for both the state and the public.
gov.uk/government/pub…
By the end of 2027, digital credentials will open up an ever-growing variety of services, accelerating processes, cutting costs and reducing hassle. Services currently overseen by a variety of departments and agencies will be connected via a unified, simplified access point.
Among the first features coming to the new GOV.UK wallet & app will be digital driving licenses, one of the most popular methods of proving one’s identity. The technology will incorporate security features such as facial recognition checks.
gov.uk/government/new…
The government stressed that the new app will be—for the time being, at least—purely optional, but this is clearly the way the wind is blowing. Regardless, it will be interesting to see how swiftly the app is adopted … and how soon the first security issues are identified.
Let’s face it. Even giant corporations like Microsoft and Apple with their armies of engineers are often forced to rush out a software patch within days/weeks of a major new product release. But for governments, such slip-ups could prove fatal for adoption.
And that’s not even considering malicious actors both foreign and domestic seeking to exploit these treasure troves of extremely sensitive data. Stated simply, there’s an awful lot riding here for both the government and the citizens being asked to test drive this app.
Blockchain tech can offer additional levels of security for the data nestling behind this app. Decentralization means a less concentrated target for bad actors, while the immutability of blockchain-based data ensures that once inscribed, it cannot be altered.
Also, the visibility of blockchain-based transactions offers a guarantee of provenance that traditional data management tools can’t hope to provide. In short, there’s a lot of blockchain benefits here to consider, because the government is only going to get one shot at the public trust.
Obviously, given the goal is onboarding tens of millions of Brits, only blockchains that can store serious amounts of data need apply. Similarly, the volume of transactions associated with these millions of records will require fees that won’t break the Bank of England.
I’ll just leave this here…

Someone in our organization recently reminded me of a ‘manifesto’ I wrote ages ago. This got me thinking of the importance of establishing standards that give everyone the confidence to proceed with projects that rely on the goalposts not moving after the ball is kicked.
About a quarter-century ago, not long after the Bodog online gambling brand I’d launched a few years earlier had established itself as a player, I sat down at my desk with a Bombay Sapphire martini and composed a document that I sent to everyone at the company.
The document came to be known as ‘The Bombay Manifesto’ due to my having mentioned early on what I was drinking. Its intent was to celebrate our early success but also to remind everyone how much work lay ahead and my thoughts of how we might improve our user experience.
This included adopting certain basic principles, like a laser focus on quick-loading pages (graphic designers’ artistic ambitions shouldn’t trump users’ desire to get on with it) and requiring the barest minimum of clicks for users to get where they wanted to go.
I wanted customer service links in the same spot on every page, so anyone needing help automatically knew where to find it. I saw the site as our first level of customer service—make it smooth enough, clear enough and quick enough so there’s little need for additional guidance.
I also wanted every page on our site to somewhat mirror the others, so that users would feel ‘at home’ regardless of what they were trying to access. This kind of ‘standardization’ not only benefited customers, it streamlined our process of creating new pages.
Having hosted what was effectively an early internet ‘incubator’ in my pre-Bodog days, I came to understand the importance of the early imposition of standards for the world wide web (HTML, URL, HTTP) to individuals/companies trying to build internet projects.
Nobody builds a structure on ground that’s constantly shifting under their feet. I’m not religious, but even I know the Biblical line about building your house on rock, not sand. Those early web standards ensured its success by giving developers confidence that the rules wouldn’t change.
Once standards are established, you can introduce open-source tools that allow innovation to arise from anywhere and anyone with ambition and vision. This is the kind of democratization of access from which insanely great projects emerge.
The blockchain I support had the similar good sense to lock its protocol, ensuring that developers could build projects with confidence. Enterprise blockchain technology focuses on building practical use cases, which is why it will outperform and outlast the speculative-focused networks.
For the record, I’m writing this stone cold sober, but I’m just as convinced that my views are as correct as they proved to be when I wrote my last ‘manifesto.’ And now, if you’ll excuse me, there’s a cocktail with my name on it calling me.
