Les Lions seront à la CAN 2017 au Gabon

Le Cameroun a obtenu son ticket après une victoire difficile contre la Mauritanie le week-end dernier (0-1).

Un seul but aura suffi. Sur un éclat de talent, comme dirait Hugo Broos, Edgar Salli inscrit l’unique but de la rencontre contre la Mauritanie à la 30e mn. Du coup, les Lions indomptables sont qualifiés pour la Coupe d’Afrique des nations, Gabon 2017, à l’issue de la 5e journée des éliminatoires le week-end dernier. Pourtant, rien n’a été facile pour eux au stade olympique de Nouakchott vendredi dernier. Au contraire, les hommes d’Hugo Broos ont souffert face à des Mourabitounes décidés à leur souffler la première place de ce groupe M. La pelouse synthétique pourrait expliquer le match des Lions. Ou peut-être l’ambiance électrique au stade, sans oublier les 40° de température. Dans tous les cas, le Cameroun s’est plus imposé à l’expérience que par son beau jeu. Et l’équipe peut également dire merci à son gardien, Fabrice Ondoa, qui a, une nouvelle fois, sorti le grand jeu sur les tentatives mauritaniennes.
Pour cette rencontre cruciale dans la course à la qualification, Hugo Broos avait misé sur le même groupe que contre la France, le 30 mai dernier. A quelques joueurs près. Oyongo Bitolo a, en effet, pris la place d’Allan Nyom, victime d’une fatigue musculaire, sur le côté droit tandis que Henri Bedimo reprenait les clés à gauche. Au milieu, Siani a eu les faveurs du sélectionneur en lieu et place de George Mandjeck. Timorés et coupables de beaucoup de pertes de balle, les Lions ont de la peine, à développer leur jeu. L’ouverture du score, sur un coup franc d’Oyongo Bitolo dégagé sur Salli, arrive un peu contre le cours du jeu. La suite, ce seront des occasions sporadiques mais surtout, une fin de deuxième mi-temps explosive pour la Mauritanie. Les Mourabitounes assiègent le camp camerounais, avec pas moins de cinq corners en une vingtaine de minutes. Mais ce fameux but qui pourrait permettre à l’équipe de Corentin Martins de garder espoir n’arrivera jamais. Même réduits à 10 après l’expulsion de Diaw El Mostapha pour un coup de coude sur Toko Ekambi à la 68e mn, les Mauritaniens n’ont rien lâché. Le jeu d’ensemble des Lions a été brouillon mais on ne va certainement pas cracher sur cette victoire.
Comme l’a dit le sélectionneur national des Lions indomptables, le plus important ce sont les trois points et non la satisfaction d’avoir fait du spectacle. C’était une mission commando et l’objectif a été atteint. Avec 11 points, dont quatre d’avance sur la Mauritanie et cinq sur l’Afrique du Sud, le Cameroun ne peut plus être rattrapé dans ce groupe M. Ce sera donc une deuxième CAN consécutive pour le groupe. Et pour la réception de la Gambie en septembre prochain, l’équipe pourra jouer sans pression. En attendant, les Lions eux, peuvent savourer des vacances bien méritées. L’essentiel est sauf.

PM Reiterates State Support To Book Industry

The four-day event that ends today was opened by the Head of State’s representative, Prime Minister Philemon Yang, on Friday, June 3, 2016, while opening the second Yaounde International Book Fair.
Thousands of visitors and book lovers are expected to throng the National Museum grounds today June 6, 2016, for the last day of Yaounde International Book Fair after curtains were officially drawn yesterday with a cultural evening. From June 2 to 6, 2016, over 10,000 visitors were expected for the second edition organised under the auspices of the Head of State, Paul Biya, by the Ministry of Arts and Culture on the theme: “Books As Vectors of Integration and Development.”
Dwelling on this theme during the opening of the Yaounde International Book Fair on June 3, 2016, the Personal Representative of the Head of State, Prime Minister, Head of Government, Philemon Yang, disclosed that government did not only seek to enable the growth of a more dynamic and booming book industry, but also to encourage access to reading by more youth. This is in line with objectives set by the country’s vision to attain emergence by 2035.
“I instruct all book professionals to spare no effort in redynamising the sector,” he disclosed, expressing hope that the Book Fair would be a launch-pad for a common strategy involving government, private sector stakeholders and development partners. Speaking earlier, the Minister of Arts and Culture, Prof. Narcisse Mouelle Kombi, established the link between economic prosperity and a vibrant book sector.
A guided tour by Philemon Yang and guests around the Book Fair grounds revealed over 100 exhibitors, including writers, printers and publishers, amongst others, occupying 75 stands. Renowned authors such as Calixte Beyala and Gaston Kelman were participants in the event which also paid homage to emblematic writers, notably, Sultan Ibrahim Njoya (1860-1933), Bernard Fonlon (1924-1986), Mongo Beti (1932-2001), Ferdinand Léopold Oyono (1929-2010) and Francis Bebey (1929-2001). Their giant effigies throned over the grounds of the building which was the former Presidential Palace until its transformation into National Museum in 1988.

Le haut commissariat a été décoré de la médaille d’officier de l’ordre de la valeur à titre posthume lors de son inhumation samedi dernier par Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, au nom du chef de l’Etat.

Il était un peu plus de 12 h samedi dernier lorsque la terre de Ndekwai, petite localité située à quelques encablures de Mamfé, chef-lieu du département de la Manyu dans la région du Sud-Ouest s’est refermée sur l’un de ses fils parmi les plus prestigieux. Peter Agbor Tabi, jusqu’au 26 avril dernier, ministre, secrétaire général adjoint de la présidence de la République rejoignait la terre de ses ancêtres. Après de mémorables obsèques officielles qui venaient d’avoir lieu quelque temps auparavant à la place des fêtes de Mamfé, en présence de centaines de personnes venues des quatre coins du Cameroun et même d’ailleurs. Sous la présidence de Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh, ministre secrétaire général de la présidence de la République, par ailleurs, représentant personnel du président de la République. Une cérémonie qui a commencé très tôt et dont le premier acte aura été l’office inter-religieux au cours duquel des prières ont été élevées pour le repos de l’âme du défunt et pour le réconfort de sa famille.
Cette phase a ensuite laissé la place aux témoignages. Quatre au total. Avec en tête, le représentant de la famille. David Agbor Tabi a tenu à dire la gratitude des siens au chef de l’Etat, Paul Biya qui n’aura ménagé aucun effort pour aider le Pr. Agbor Tabi durant sa maladie, mais surtout qui aura contribué à l’aider à bâtir la carrière exceptionnelle qui aura été la sienne durant ses 65 années de vie, dont environ la moitié consacrée au service de son pays. Par la voix de Joseph Dion Ngute, le Comité central du RDPC a dit sa gratitude au disparu pour l’engagement et la loyauté avec lesquels il a servi la formation politique dont il était membre et son pays. Samuel Agbor Tabi, le fils du défunt lui également est allé de ses mots de remerciements au président de la République, alors que les chefs traditionnels du Sud-Ouest pleuraient la disparition d’un des leurs. L’assistance pouvait dès lors écouter le message de condoléances du chef de l’Etat adressé à la veuve, Déborah Agbor Tabi. Dans ce message lu par le préfet du département de la Manyu, Paul Biya a salué la mémoire d’un « collaborateur rigoureux et compétent » dont la disparition constitue une perte, non seulement pour les siens, mais pour son pays le Cameroun qu’il aura servi avec abnégation. On pouvait donc comprendre les obsèques officielles décidées en l’honneur du défunt, dont l’un des points importants aura été la décoration à titre posthume au grade d’officier de l’ordre national de la valeur par le ministre, secrétaire général de la présidence de la République. Ferdinand Ngoh Ngoh a ensuite pris la parole.
Dans une allocution en anglais et en français, il a évoqué la perte d’une figure éminente de l’administration camerounaise, dont l’un des faits majeurs aura été l’implication dans la réforme de l’enseignement supérieur intervenue au Cameroun en 1993. La voix empreinte d’émotion, il a évoqué tour à tour l’enseignant et le chef d’établissement rigoureux et compétent qu’il aura connus à l’Institut des relations internationales du Cameroun (IRIC), alors qu’il y était étudiant et le travailleur intègre, humble et poli qu’il a retrouvé plus tard au secrétariat général de la présidence de la République. Il a tenu à rassurer les proches du défunt « Aucun mot ne peut apaiser la douleur qui est la vôtre. Soyez sûrs que vous n’êtes pas seuls dans ces instants ». Un discours qui a laissé la place à l’inhumation dans la stricte intimité au caveau familial à la chefferie de Ndekwai.

La grippe aviaire s'étend à Bafoussam et Bayangam

La vente de poulet interdite à Bafoussam. Le gouverneur Augustine Awa Fonka a donné un point de presse vendredi après la découverte de foyers de grippe aviaire.

Des visages renfrognés. Des mines tristes qui cherchent encore à comprendre ce qui se passe. Une pilule amère et difficile à avaler. Pourtant, les aviculteurs des départements de la Mifi (bafoussam) et du Koung-Khi (Bandjoun) doivent se faire à la triste réalité. Des foyers de Grippe aviaire ont été détectés dans ces deux départements. Tout est parti du décès de 1 400 poulets enregistrés dans une ferme à Bayangam et de 40 poulets morts au marché Casablanca de Bafoussam le 31 mai. Les échantillons prélevés sur leurs carcasses et envoyés au Laboratoire national vétérinaire de Yaoundé et transmis au Centre Pasteur pour contre-expertise, ont été positifs. Le gouverneur Augustine Awa Fonka a fait le point sur la situation, vendredi dernier, au cours d’une réunion de crise avec les éleveurs.
Des mesures d’urgence à application immédiate ont été prises, pour circonscrire l’épizootie. « Il sera procédé immédiatement à l’abattage systématique suivi de l’incinération du cheptel dans ce foyer du côté de Bayangam. Et pour éviter sa propagation, nous allons interdire le mouvement de ces produits dans tout le département du Koung-Khi. Ce sera également le cas pour le département de la Mifi. Jusqu’à nouvel ordre, nous n’allons pas autoriser les autres marchés de la région de l’Ouest de fonctionner, sauf sur recommandation des responsables techniques du MINEPIA », a indiqué Awa Fonka. Ces mesures, a-t-il ajouté, sont impératives pour sauver l’économie de la région qui dépend en majorité de ce secteur d’activité. Dont l’effectif du cheptel avoisine sept millions, avec une production d’un milliard d’œufs et de 700 millions de fientes par an.
Le numéro un de la région a insisté sur la collaboration des éleveurs avec les services techniques régionaux du MINEPIA et du MINSANTE, les autorités administratives et les FMO, pour contenir la menace. Du côté de la Santé publique, le Dr Elie Simo a rassuré qu’aucun cas de grippe humaine n’a encore été déclaré. La cellule de crise du MINSANTE sera à l’Ouest dans les tous prochains jours, à l’effet de prélever certains échantillons sur le personnel travaillant dans les fermes contaminées. Un guide sur les conseils pratiques a été distribué aux éleveurs pour gérer la crise.

Special Criminal Court: Ex-Limbe Government Delegate, Two Others Freed

Samuel Lifanda and co-accused paid the amounts they were accused of embezzling before the matter came to court.
The former Government Delegate to the Limbe City Council, Samuel Ebiama Lifanda, reportedly a Pentecostal church pastor, is once more enjoying the air of freedom following his release on May 27, 2016, from detention in the Kondengui-Yaounde Maximum Security Prison by a decision of the Special Criminal Court, SCC. Lifanda was set free alongside Casimir Nyime Lyonga, the then Technical Head for Urban Affairs and Priso Simon Mokosa, ex-Service Head for Urban Affairs – all with the Limbe City Council.
Cameroon Tribune’s attempts on June 4, 2016, to reach Samuel Lifanda on phone were cut short by the wife who said he was not ready to talk to the media. Entreated to say when she thought her husband could be available, she retorted that she did not know and quickly hung up. Another family member would not say if Lifanda was now back with the family in Limbe or was still in Yaounde as rumoured. According to a source at the Yaounde-based Special Criminal Court, Lifanda and the two others were jointly accused of embezzling about 67 million FCFA, being funds from undue waivers he granted for building permits.
The former Government Delegate was responsible for most of the sum, with Nyime and Mokosa accused of embezzling relatively smaller amounts. The SCC judicial source said the three suspects were released in accordance with the presidential decree setting up the SCC, with the approval of the Minister of Justice and Keeper of the Seals before the matter got to court. The advantage at this level, our source pointed out, is that the offence will not be entered into Lifanda’s criminal records; unlike those who are charged to court and later released after reimbursing the amounts they embezzled.
Samuel Ebiama Lifanda, Casimir Nyime Lyonga and Priso Simon Mokosa, were on June 10, 2015, remanded in prison custody after appearing before an SCC Examining Magistrate on charges of embezzlement and mismanagement. The former Government Delegate was on February 6, 2009 replaced by Andrew Motanga Monjimba. He was appointed to the position in 1998, replacing the late Henry Njalla Quan, the pioneer Government Delegate to the then Limbe Urban Council.

Yaounde Economic Conference: Senators Promise Support For Paul Biya

While opening the Second Ordinary Session on June 2, 2016, Senate President, Niat Njifenji saw the follow-up of recommendations of the confab as a must.

Dust is yet to settle on the aftermath of the Yaounde International Economic Conference which held from 17 to 18 May, 2016 at the Conference Centre where the Second Ordinary Session of the Senate opened on June 2, 2016. It is therefore understandable why Senators felt concerned about giving all their support to ensure the implementation of the confab’s resolutions.
While addressing congratulations to the Head of State, Paul Biya, for taking such an initiative, Senate President Marcel Niat Njifenji, indicated that the theme, “Investing in Cameroon, Land of Attractiveness”, translated the determination of the President to seek ways and means of stimulating investments and attracting new partners. This, he added, is with a view to eventually integrate the economy within the global scene in the most judicious and beneficial manner.
More so, Marcel Niat Njifenji acknowledged that the confab did edify Senators on the weaknesses and strengths of the national economy. “We are better equipped to fine-tune our growth and employment strategy by particularly allowing the private sector to fully play its role in this regard,” he declared.
It is therefore expected that through various aspects of parliamentary business in this session such as scrutiny of bills and questions to government, Senators will lay emphasis on ensuring the implementation of the relevant recommendations of the conference “which now enable our country to look into the future with optimism while trusting in the results of our partnerships created with national project owners and investors present at the conference.”

Niger Government Forces Retake Bosso

They launched a fierce counterattack against Boko Haram terrorists that attacked the border town on June 3, 2016.
Niger’s government forces are now in total control of all their positions in the south-eastern town of Bosso located on the border with Nigeria after Boko Haram fighters raided the town on Friday, June 3. In the attack, the terrorist fighters killed 30 Nigerien troops, two soldiers from neighbouring Nigeria and wounded at least 67 soldiers, BBC reported citing Niger’s Defence Ministry as having said on June 4.
ABC News reported the Defence Ministry statement which indicated that the military launched a counterattack the following day using air and land forces, pushing the militants out of Bosso and inflicting heavy casualties. The counter-attack on Saturday morning allowed government troops to retake all positions in Bosso.
Boko Haram reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack, saying 35 soldiers were killed, according to the SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadi online postings. BBC quoted the Defence Ministry statement of disclosing that, "hundreds of assailants" attacked a military post in the south-eastern town of Bosso, on the Nigerian border, on Friday night. The Boko Haram militants, “burned houses, looted food stores and shops, and burned the military post before fleeing with weapons and ammunition," ABC News quoted Adam Boukarna, a deputy in Bosso as having said.
Residents reportedly left Bosso during the attacks and headed to Toumour, about 30 kilometers to the west.Boko Haram insurgencies have been frequent in the south-eastern part of Niger, especially in the border localities of Bosso and Diffa. The Chinese government news agency, XINHUA reported that on Wednesday, June 1, Boko Haram militants attacked Yebi in Diffa and killed nine civilians. The militants also killed six people in another attack in the area two weeks ago. BBC reported that last March, six soldiers from Niger’s army were killed in a Boko Haram ambush in the area.

AFCON 2017: Five Countries Already Qualified

Egypt, Senegal, Algeria, Morocco and Cameroon have so far clinched their qualification spots for the final phase of the tournament in Gabon.
Six of the sixteen teams to take part in the final phase of the African Cup of Nations to take place early next year in Gabon are already known. They are namely, Egypt, Senegal, Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon and host country Gabon. While Gabon got her qualification from the office by winning the bid to host the 2017 edition of the tournament, the others had to slot it out from the green turf of the pitch after taking an unassailable lead in their respective groups.
Egypt and Morocco were the first countries to qualify and will be making a return to the continental scene after having missed out on the 2015 edition of the tournament in Equatorial Guinea. Egypt simply didn’t qualify after having been stunned by little known Republic of Congo in the last and crucial qualification match. Meanwhile Morocco was banned from taking part in the competition after refusing to host the competition because of Ebola scare.
The sentence was higher but Morocco appealed the decision and the ban was lifted. After winning the legal battle Morocco also won on the pitch of play dominating Group F earning 12 points in four outings. Egypt equally sailed through Group G virtually unperturbed with 10 points in four outing with Nigeria coming distant second in the group with barely two points.
Algeria and Senegal also picked up their qualification tickets before the last day of play of the qualifiers top come up during the weekend running from September second to third. Algeria sailed through Group G with flying colours obtaining 13 points in five outings and can no longer be caught up by the runners up of the group, Ethiopia with barely five points.
Meanwhile Senegal witnessed an unbeaten run in Group K winning all fifteen points up for grab in the group so far and will also be making a return to the continental scene in Gabon. Cameroon as already known picked up the lone qualification ticket in Group M after butting out the last surviving contender, Mauritania in the fifth qualification match on Friday June 3rd.
The rest of the qualified nations will be known after the last day of play of the qualifiers on September second and third. Besides the respective group leaders, the overall best runners-up of all the 13 groups join the host for the final phase of the competition in Gabon.

Mohamed Ali: The Fallen Monument

The three times world heavy weight champion died of respiratory illness aged 74.
The three times world heavy weight champion, Mohamed Ali finally lost a three-decade-old battle with Parkinson disease and died of respiratory illness on Friday June 4th at the Scottsdale hospital in the US city of Phoenix, Arizona. The man who lifted boxing from a back street sport to international acclamation died having lost his physical dexterity and oratory as his health took a final downward turn since 2013.
Mohamed Ali born as Cassius Marcellus Clay will be remembered for his achievements both on and off the boxing ring. He had 61 fights in a professional career that spanned 21 years winning 56 of them, 37 by knock outs. He was three time world champion, one time gold medalist at the Olympic Games and won 31 straight fights before being beaten by Joe Frazer. However the most memorable of his fights to African is the epic fight for the world title against George Foreman which took place in Kinshasa, former Zaire known as “the rumble in the jungle”.
Mohamed will be remembered for his stance against the Vietnam War, speaking out against racial discrimination and his conversion to Islam as well as his participation in the civil rights movement in America notably through the nations of Islam by the side of Malcolm X. Crowned "Sportsman of the Century" by Sports Illustrated and "Sports Personality of the Century" by the BBC, Ali was noted for his pre- and post-fight talk and bold fight predictions just as much as his boxing skills inside the ring.
But he was also a civil rights campaigner and poet who transcended the bounds of sport, race and nationality. Asked how he would like to be remembered, he once said: "As a man who never sold out his people,” he said adding in his characteristic manners that “If that's too much, then just a good boxer. "I won't even mind if you don't mention how pretty I was," he added.
Tributes have been pouring in from all over the world. "Muhammad Ali shook up the world. And the world is better for it," said US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle. Former President Bill Clinton - husband of Democratic frontrunner Hillary - said the boxer had been "courageous in the ring, inspiring to the young, compassionate to those in need, and strong and good-humoured in bearing the burden of his own health challenges".
Republican presumptive presidential nominee Donald Trump, meanwhile, tweeted that Ali was "truly great champion and a wonderful guy. He will be missed by all!" George Foreman, who lost his world title to Ali in the famous "Rumble in the Jungle" fight in Kinshasa in 1974, called him one of the greatest human beings he had ever met.

School Textbooks: Publishers, Bookshop Owners Begin Placing Orders

Stakeholders say they want to avoid last-minute rush by getting approved books on time for school reopening.
Preparations for the 2016/2017 academic year in Cameroon have already begun in earnest, following the publication lists of approved textbooks about three weeks ago by the Ministries of Basic and Secondary Education. The books are for pre-nursery, primary, secondary and high schools. As a result, publishers and bookshop owners are busy placing orders for printing and supply respectively.
Talking to Cameroon Tribune in Yaounde on June 4, 2016, Atem Emmanuel Ndeisieh, of Cosmos Educational Press, said they had about 40 per cent of books from leftover stocks to supply. He explained that this concerns Cosmos books that were already on accredited lists, since accreditation lasts at least three academic years. “On the other hand, we have already placed orders for 40 per cent of our books to be printed in India, while printing of the remaining 20 per cent is going on in the country,” he noted.
Meanwhile, Cosmos Educational Press is to meet book distributors in the country early next month. A similar meeting has already been held with Limbe-based book sellers. Still as part of efforts to ensure that approved textbooks are available on time for the next school reopening, members of the Cameroon Book Publishers’ Syndicate, CAMBUPUSYN and National Association of Cameroon Book Publishers, ANELCAM, are planning to meet next month to synergize their efforts. Still concerning textbook supply, Nkwelle Primus of ANUCAM Educational Books said they had already placed orders for printing in India, while half of the job is being done locally.
“The books printed in India are expected to arrive in the country in July 2016, two months before school reopening,” he assured. The ANUCAM representative expressed hope that there will be no congestion in the Douala Seaport this year to ease the clearance of the ordered books. ANUCAM has enough old stocks of textbooks to start the season while waiting for new supplies, Nkwelle assured.
Miranda Njenku of Presbook, EMIA Junction, Melen, Yaounde, said her bookshop has already placed orders with publishers. “Majority of Cameroonian publishers will only start printing from early July to prevent their works from being pirated,” Njenku explained. In the nearby Cosmopen Bookshop, a source said they were yet to place orders for school textbooks, saying it was still early in the day.
