Professor David Rees, born May 29 1918, died August 16 2013
Awards and honours
In 1993 Rees was awarded the Pólya Prize by the London Mathematical Society. In August 1998 a conference on Commutative Algebra was held at Exeter in honour of David Rees' 80th Year. He was an Honorary Fellow of Downing College, Cambridge[10]. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 1968.[3]
"Welchman set up Hut 6, the section breaking German army and air force Enigma ciphers, and recruited a number of promising Cambridge mathematicians to work with him. They included Rees, who was immediately put to work in the Hut 6 Machine Room, the subsection where the Enigma ciphers were being broken.

Several ciphers had been broken at the beginning of 1940 as a result of information supplied by the Polish codebreakers. But by the spring of that year the Polish methods were no longer working, and Bletchley had been unable to make more than the occasional break into the German ciphers. The “Yellow” Enigma cipher used by the Germans in Norway had been relatively easy to crack, but the ciphers used elsewhere were proving difficult."

"My grandfather knew Prof David Rees. I attached details of work I had been doing that was based on mathematics and a system called Cocao that Prof. Rees pointed me to many many years before. I told the Australian tax office about David Rees in 2009. I was discussing some of his role as I moved assets into other companies again in 2013.

Prof Rees died in August 2013."

M.A. University of Cambridge UnitedKingdom
Dissertation: His only doctorate is his DSc, which is awarded for published papers. So he never had a PhD supervisor. The reason for that is that the second world war interrupted his studies. Because he started graduate work in Cambridge in the autumn of 1939. Within months he had been moved by the British government to work at Bletchley Park, where they were working to break the German code

Prof Rees died in August 2013.

At this point, the Australian tax office claimed that I had used Prof. Rees knowing that he would die before they could contact him. Prof. Rees gave me notes on the Asymptotic Theory of Ideals (Rees 1988). I use them today. They have been incredibly helpful in some of the work I’ve been doing. I don’t know the future. We are all mortal, and if you need something verified, do it when the person is alive. But the Australian government never really sought to prove anything. They just wanted me gone."
