๐๏ธ TYPES OF BUILDING STRUCTURAL COLLAPSE
โ๏ธUnderstanding structural failures is essential for civil engineers, structural engineers, site engineers, and construction professionals.
๐น 1. Pancake Collapse
Occurs when multiple floors collapse vertically onto one another, often due to the failure of columns or other critical structural elements.
๐น 2. Progressive Collapse
Occurs when the failure of one structural element triggers the failure of other elements, causing a larger portion of the building to collapse.
๐น 3. Soft-Story Collapse
Happens when a weak or flexible floor, commonly an open ground floor used for parking or shops, fails under earthquake forces.
๐น 4. Column Failure
Occurs when columns lose their ability to carry structural loads due to overloading, poor reinforcement detailing, or inadequate concrete strength.
๐น 5. Beam Failure
Occurs when beams fail under excessive bending moments, shear forces, or other loads beyond their structural capacity.
๐น 6. Punching Shear Failure
Occurs when a column punches through a concrete slab, commonly in flat-slab systems, due to excessive shear stress around the column.
๐น 7. Foundation Failure
Occurs when the foundation or supporting soil cannot safely carry the building loads, potentially causing settlement, tilting, or collapse.
๐น 8. Shear Wall Failure
Happens when structural walls lose their ability to resist lateral forces caused by earthquakes or wind.
๐น 9. Buckling Failure
Occurs when a compression member, such as a slender column, becomes unstable and bends under compressive loading.
๐น 10. Partial Collapse
Occurs when only a portion of a building, such as a floor, roof, or structural bay, collapses while the remaining structure stays standing.
๐น 11. Total or Global Collapse
Occurs when the building as a whole loses its structural stability, resulting in the collapse of most or all of the structure.
๐น 12. Fire-Induced Collapse
Happens when high temperatures reduce material strength, damage connections, or cause excessive deformation of structural elements.
๐น 13. Earthquake-Induced Collapse
Occurs when seismic forces and deformations exceed the building's capacity, often due to inadequate seismic design or poor reinforcement detailing.
๐น 14. Roof Collapse
Occurs when roof elements or connections fail due to excessive loading, strong winds, fire, corrosion, or construction defects.
โ ๏ธ KEY ENGINEERING LESSON
Building collapse can often be prevented or its consequences reduced through proper structural design, soil investigation, quality materials, correct reinforcement detailing, effective site supervision, and compliance with applicable building codes.

๐ฃ๏ธROAD PAVEMENT LAYERS โ COMPONENTS, MATERIALS & FUNCTIONS
๐Road pavement is constructed in multiple layers to distribute traffic loads safely to the underlying soil.
๐ฅEach layer plays an important role in providing strength, durability, drainage, and a smooth riding surface.
๐น 1. Wearing Course
The topmost layer, generally made of asphalt concrete or another specified surfacing material.
โ Provides a smooth riding surface.
โ Improves skid resistance and driving comfort.
โ Protects lower layers against water and weather.
โ Resists abrasion and traffic wear.
๐น 2. Binder Course
An intermediate asphalt layer provided where required by the pavement design.
โ Connects the wearing course to the lower pavement layers.
โ Adds structural strength.
โ Helps distribute traffic loads.
โ Provides additional pavement thickness.
๐น 3. Base Course
A major structural layer commonly made of graded crushed aggregate or other approved materials.
โ Provides substantial load-bearing capacity.
โ Distributes wheel loads to the subbase.
โ Resists deformation under repeated traffic loading.
๐น 4. Subbase Course
A layer beneath the base course, usually constructed using suitable granular material or other specified materials.
โ Provides additional structural support.
โ Helps manage water and drainage.
โ Improves construction stability.
โ Can help reduce pumping and contamination of the base when properly designed.
๐น 5. Compacted Subgrade
The prepared natural soil or selected fill that supports the entire pavement structure.
โ Provides a stable foundation.
โ Must be compacted to the specified requirements.
โ Its strength and moisture condition influence pavement performance.
โ Weak subgrade may require stabilization or additional treatment.
๐๏ธ Main Functions of Road Pavement
- Distributes traffic loads safely to the subgrade.
- Provides a smooth, comfortable and safe driving surface.
- Resists traffic wear and environmental effects.
- Helps control water infiltration and manage drainage.
- Reduces deformation, rutting and premature pavement failure.
๐ Important Engineering Note
The number, thickness and materials of pavement layers depend on traffic volume, axle loads, subgrade strength, climate, drainage conditions and applicable design standards. Not every flexible pavement requires a separate binder course, and some pavements use alternative layer arrangements.
Remember: Proper material selection, layer thickness, compaction and drainage are essential for a durable road pavement.

๐Structural design is all about calculating loads.
๐The engineering firm Nishkian offers a succinct description: โLoads are commonly understood as forces that cause stresses, deformations, or accelerations.
These loads are applied to a structure or its components that cause stress or displacement.โ From the general concept of โloadโ comes two major categories: dead loads and live loads. How do they differ?
๐DEAD LOADS
โบIn short, the dead load of a structure comprises its completed weight, usually measured in pounds per square foot, before it goes into service.
The floors, walls, roof, columns, stairs, permanent equipment and any fixed decor constitute a static load that normally doesnโt change over the life of the building.
To quote Nishkian again: โ[D]ead loads account for the non-dynamic forces that place continuous and permanent force on a structure.โ
Therefore, calculations for the dead load before a building takes on the additional loads from occupancy or use, the weight of its components and the pressures applied in a downward direction to the ground must include the concrete for the foundation system, planned building materials plus any service equipment such as elevators, HVAC units and ductwork, plumbing, fixed manufacturing equipment, etc.
๐LIVE LOADS
Live loads refer to the dynamic forces from occupancy and intended use.
They represent the transient forces that can be moved through the building or act on any particular structural element. Also measured in psf, these loads include the anticipated weight of people, furniture, appliances, automobiles, moveable equipment and the like.
The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) require that minimum live loads in the design should always exceed the maximum anticipated live loads over the course of the buildingโs life span in case loads are, in fact, surpassed. ASCE guidelines prescribe live loads according to categories of intended occupancy and use per building type.
Because live loads depend on structural strength, knowledge of the exact planned use of the building is critical.
The might of the dead load, or lack thereof, often defines how much live load it can handle.
Reinforced concrete creates the heaviest dead loads but also supports the most weight with its tremendous compressive strength.
Structural steel offers much less of a dead load and provides superior support for live loads in multi-story buildings.
Natural and engineered wood rest relatively lightly on the foundation but support less live loads than steel and concrete.
The total dead plus live loads equal the โgravity loadโ of the structure. But yet more loads act upon buildings, as well.
๐ENVIRONMENTAL LOADS
Before an edifice can pass code requirements, the structural design must also include other dynamic loads acting on it laterally.
These environmental loads can come from snow, wind, soil movement and seismic activity.
Naturally, Colorado Front Range codes are light on seismic controls but certainly factor in extreme snow, wind and soil conditions.
