🏗️HOW TO CALCULATE THE NUMBER OF STAIR STEPS, RISERS, AND TREADS

Staircase design is an important part of building construction.

Correctly calculating the riser height, tread depth, stair angle, and landing dimensions helps create a comfortable and safe staircase. 📐

📌 1. Given Data (Example)

- Total floor height = 3,000 mm (3.0 m)
- Mid-landing level = 1,200 mm
- Landing thickness = 100 mm
- Stair width = 3,000 mm
- Assumed riser height = 150 mm
- Desired tread depth = 300 mm

📏 2. Calculate the Number of Risers

Formula:

Number of risers = Total rise ÷ Riser height

= 3,000 ÷ 150

= 20 risers

For two equal flights, this gives 10 risers per flight. The exact division must match the actual landing elevations and floor levels.

🪜 3. Calculate the Number of Treads

For a conventional stair flight, the number of treads is generally one less than the number of risers.

Number of treads = Number of risers − 1

= 20 − 1

= 19 treads overall, subject to the flight and landing arrangement.

📐 4. Check the Stair Angle

Formula:

tan θ = Riser ÷ Tread

= 150 ÷ 300 = 0.50

θ = tan⁻¹(0.50)

= 26.6°

This is within the commonly used 25°–45° range, although comfortable residential stairs are often designed around 30°–35°.

🧱 5. Estimate Concrete Quantity

Concrete volume = Length × Width × Thickness

Using the simplified dimensions shown in the illustration:

- Lower flight: 3.0 × 1.0 × 0.15 = 0.450 m³
- Mid-landing: 3.0 × 2.0 × 0.10 = 0.600 m³
- Upper flight: 3.0 × 1.0 × 0.15 = 0.450 m³

Illustrative total = 1.500 m³

⚠️ This is a simplified estimate, not a final structural quantity. Actual staircase concrete must account for the sloping waist slab, steps, landing geometry, and the structural design.

✅ 6. Important Staircase Design Tips

1. Keep riser heights uniform throughout each staircase.
2. Use a consistent tread depth for safe footing.
3. Check headroom, landing dimensions, and handrail requirements.
4. Verify the floor-to-floor height and landing levels before setting out.
5. Design reinforcement according to the applicable structural code.
6. Confirm all dimensions against architectural and structural drawings.

Important correction: The illustration contains inconsistent flight calculations.

A total rise of 3,000 mm divided by 150 mm gives 20 risers, but two flights with 1,200 mm rise each account for only 2,400 mm. The remaining 600 mm must be resolved before construction.

Also, tread count depends on how the top landing and floor level are treated.

📌 Always verify the staircase geometry and reinforcement with the approved drawings and applicable building code before construction.

💬 Question for civil engineers: What riser height and tread depth do you commonly use in your projects?
