๐ฃ๏ธ TYPICAL ROAD PAVEMENT STRUCTURE โ FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT
Flexible pavement is a multi-layer road structure designed to distribute traffic loads safely to the underlying soil. Each layer plays an important role in providing strength, durability, riding comfort, and resistance to water and traffic damage.
๐ 1. Surface / Wearing Course (40โ50 mm)
- The top layer, commonly constructed using asphalt concrete.
- Provides a smooth, skid-resistant riding surface.
- Resists abrasion and protects lower layers from water infiltration.
- Improves driving comfort and road safety.
๐ 2. Binder Course (50โ70 mm)
- Usually constructed using an asphalt mixture.
- Provides additional structural strength.
- Bonds the wearing course to the lower pavement layers.
- Helps distribute traffic stresses.
๐ 3. Base Course (150โ250 mm)
- Commonly constructed using crushed aggregates or other approved base materials.
- Acts as the main structural layer.
- Distributes wheel loads over a wider area.
- Provides stability and resistance to deformation.
๐ 4. Subbase (150โ300 mm)
- Usually consists of suitable granular material.
- Provides additional support to the base course.
- Can assist drainage when properly designed.
- Helps reduce contamination and mixing between the base and subgrade.
๐ 5. Subgrade (Thickness as per design)
- The prepared and compacted natural soil or improved ground beneath the pavement.
- Supports the entire pavement structure.
- Must meet specified strength, moisture, and compaction requirements.
- Its bearing capacity, commonly assessed using the California Bearing Ratio (CBR), influences pavement thickness.
๐ How does flexible pavement work?
Traffic loads are transferred from the wearing course through the binder, base, and subbase to the compacted subgrade. The stresses gradually decrease with depth, so the pavement layers must be designed to withstand the expected traffic loading and ground conditions.
โ ๏ธ Important Engineering Note:
The thicknesses shown are illustrative typical ranges, not universal design values. Actual pavement thickness depends on traffic volume, axle loads, subgrade strength, drainage, climate, material properties, and the applicable road design standards. Some pavement designs may also omit or combine certain layers.
๐๏ธ Remember: Proper material selection, compaction, drainage, and quality control are essential for long-lasting roads.
