πSite Engineerβs responsibilities during the construction of Reinforced Concrete slabs β step by step, from preparation to completion:
𧱠1. Pre-Construction Responsibilities
Before slab work starts, the site engineer must:
βΊCheck drawings and specifications: Review structural and architectural drawings (reinforcement details, slab thickness, beam layout, and column locations).
βΊVerify formwork setup: Ensure the formwork/shuttering is correctly placed, level, and properly supported to prevent sagging or deflection.
βΊConfirm materials: Check the quality of cement, aggregates, water, and reinforcement bars according to standards.
βΊEnsure correct cover: Verify that proper cover blocks are provided for top and bottom reinforcement as per design.
βΊInspect services layout: Coordinate with electrical and plumbing teams so conduits and pipes are placed before concreting.
π© 2. Reinforcement Work Supervision
Check bar bending schedule (BBS):
βΊEnsure bars are cut, bent, and placed as per approved BBS.
βΊRebar placement: Confirm correct spacing, overlap (lapping length), anchorage, and alignment of top and bottom meshes.
βΊSupport and chairs: Verify that proper spacers and chairs are provided to maintain reinforcement position.
βΊInspection before concreting: Ensure all reinforcement and embedded items (pipes, sleeves, inserts) are inspected and approved by the structural engineer or consultant.
π§° 3. Formwork & Level Control
βΊForm alignment: Confirm formwork is tight, clean, and oiled to prevent leakage.
βΊLevel and slope: Use leveling instruments to ensure the slab surface will be even and at correct height.
βΊJoint sealing: Check joints in shuttering to avoid cement slurry leakage during pouring.
π§ͺ 4. Concreting Work
βΊMix verification: Ensure the concrete mix ratio and slump meet the approved design (trial mix results).
βΊPouring supervision: Oversee concrete pouring in layers and prevent segregation.
βΊVibration: Ensure proper compaction with mechanical vibrators to avoid honeycombing or voids.
βΊCuring compound (if used): Ensure correct application for flat slabs, especially in large surface areas.
π§ 5. Curing and Finishing
βΊCuring: Ensure continuous curing for at least 7β21 days (depending on cement type) using water ponding or wet coverings & Admixtures.
βΊSurface finishing: Check for surface smoothness, slopes (if any), and cracks after curing starts.
βΊRemove formwork: Only after achieving sufficient strength (as per engineerβs direction).
π§Ύ 6. Documentation and Quality Control
βΊMaintain daily site records, concrete cube test reports, and pour cards.
βΊRecord slump test results, concrete delivery times, and curing logs.
βΊPrepare as-built reports and update site diary regularly.
π§ββοΈ 7. Safety Responsibilities
βΊEnsure workers wear PPEs (helmets, gloves, boots).
βΊCheck formwork safety before pouring.
βΊPrevent overloading on slab before achieving full strength.
