๐Ÿ‘‰THE CHEMISTRY OF A CONCRETE MIX

๐Ÿ’ซWhen you combine Cement + Water + Aggregates + (Admixtures) a set of chemical reactions begin automatically.

๐ŸšงThe most important chemical process is hydration โ€” the reaction between cement and water.

๐Ÿท1. Chemistry of Cement

Cement is mainly made of four compounds:

*Tricalcium Silicate , Cโ‚ƒS for Early strength + heat
*Dicalcium Silicate, Cโ‚‚S for Later strength
*Tricalcium Aluminate, Cโ‚ƒA to Controls setting (fast reaction)
*Tetracalcium Aluminoferrite,  Cโ‚„AF for Minor strength

Gypsum (CaSOโ‚„ยท2Hโ‚‚O) is added to control setting time.

๐Ÿท2. When water is added โ†’ Hydration begins

Water reacts with cement compounds to form new materials that make the concrete hard and strong.

๐Ÿงฌ A. Main Reaction: Formation of Cโ€“Sโ€“H Gel

Cโ‚ƒS + Water โ†’ Cโ€“Sโ€“H (Calcium Silicate Hydrate) + Ca(OH)โ‚‚

Cโ€“Sโ€“H gel is the glue that binds everything

Gives strength + durability

Forms 50โ€“60% of the final hardened concrete

Cโ‚‚S reacts slower:

Cโ‚‚S + Water โ†’ Cโ€“Sโ€“H + Less Ca(OH)โ‚‚

This provides long-term strength.

๐Ÿงฌ B. Formation of Ettringite (Setting Control)

Cโ‚ƒA reacts extremely fast, so gypsum controls the reaction:

Cโ‚ƒA + Gypsum + Water โ†’ Ettringite

Ettringite crystals cause initial setting (stiffening).

If gypsum is finished, ettringite converts to monosulfate:

Ettringite โ†’ Monosulfate

๐Ÿงฌ C. Reaction of Cโ‚„AF

Produces ferrite hydrates that help setting but add little strength.

๐Ÿท3. Chemistry of Aggregates

Aggregates do not react much chemically.
Their main role is:

*Fill space
*Provide bulk
*Reduce cement content
*Improve strength by interlocking

But their surface bonds chemically with the Cโ€“Sโ€“H gel.

๐Ÿท4. Waterโ€“Cement Ratio (w/c) Chemistry

Lower water = denser hydration products.

Low w/c โ†’ more Cโ€“Sโ€“H, higher strength

High w/c โ†’ more pores, weaker concrete

๐Ÿท5. Chemistry of Admixtures
Admixtures modify hydration:

*Plasticizers / Superplasticizers

Disperse cement particles

Reduce water demand

Delay or accelerate hydration based on type

*Retarders
Slow down Cโ‚ƒA + Cโ‚ƒS reaction

*Accelerators
Speed up early hydration

๐Ÿท6. Chemistry Timeline of Concrete Hydration

*0โ€“2 Hours: Initial setting

-Cโ‚ƒA + Gypsum โ†’ Ettringite
-Early Cโ‚ƒS reaction begins

*2โ€“10 Hours: Final setting

-Needle-like crystals lock particles
-Concrete becomes solid

*1โ€“7 Days: Early Strength

-Rapid Cโ€“Sโ€“H growth from Cโ‚ƒS

*7โ€“28 Days: Major Strength Gain

-Slow hydration of Cโ‚‚S
-Pore structure becomes tighter

*Monthsโ€“Years: Long-term Hydration

-Continuous formation of Cโ€“Sโ€“H gel
-Increase in durability

๐Ÿ“Œ In simple words:

โบConcrete gets hard because cement reacts with water and forms glue (Cโ€“Sโ€“H gel) and crystals that bind sand and stone together.

๐Ÿ‘‰Claim on Additional floor Construction/Addition Works/:

๐Ÿ’ซA contractor can generally claim for an additional floor construction requested by the client, but it depends on the contract agreement and the change management procedures in place.

๐ŸทHow it usually works?

๐Ÿšง1. Check the Original Contract

If the signed contract was for G+8, and now the client wants to extend to G+10, this is outside the original scope.

The contractor is not obligated to do it without a variation order (VO) or new contract agreement.

๐Ÿšง2. Variation / Change Order

Most contracts (FIDIC, PPA Ethiopia 2011, etc.) have clauses for variations.

The client (or Engineer/Consultant) issues a variation instruction in writing.

The contractor then submits a claim for:

Additional costs (materials, labor, equipment, subcontractors).

Time extension (because adding two floors increases duration).

๐Ÿšง3. Contractorโ€™s Right to Claim

The contractor can claim if:

The client formally instructs the change.

The change affects cost and time.

Contractor must submit the claim within the time frame stated in the contract (often 28 days in FIDIC).

๐Ÿšง4. Evaluation and Approval

The Engineer/Consultant or Client evaluates the claim.

Once approved, the contract price and completion date are adjusted.

๐Ÿšง5. Risks if No Formal Agreement

If the contractor builds extra floors without written approval, payment disputes may arise.

The client may later refuse to pay, claiming it was not properly instructed.

๐Ÿ“œIn summary:

โบThe contractor has the right to claim for additional floor construction requested by the client, but it must go through the formal variation/change order process, with clear documentation of cost and time impact.

๐Ÿ‘‰performance-related pay (PRP) in the construction industry, with a focus on Ethiopia and East Africa, and how it connects to global practice.

๐Ÿšง1. What Performance-Related Pay Means

Performance-related pay (PRP) links an employeeโ€™s earnings to measurable results โ€” not just to time worked.
In construction, that means workers, supervisors, or contractors can earn extra pay for doing one or more of the following:

โ€ข Finishing work faster than planned (without lowering quality)
โ€ข Keeping costs within or below budget
โ€ข Maintaining a strong safety record
โ€ข Delivering high-quality workmanship
โ€ข Meeting specific productivity targets

Itโ€™s a way to motivate performance, reward efficiency, and align the workerโ€™s interest with the projectโ€™s success.

๐Ÿšง2. How PRP Works in Global Construction Practice

Around the world, PRP takes several main forms:

a. Bonus and Incentive Schemes
โ€ข End-of-project bonuses: Paid when a project is completed early or meets key milestones.
โ€ข Safety or quality bonuses: Reward workers or teams for achieving zero accidents or quality rework.
โ€ข Performance appraisals: Supervisors and professionals are evaluated yearly, and bonuses are tied to ratings.

b. Piecework (Output-Based Pay)

Common in trades like bricklaying, plastering, roofing, or steel fixing.
Workers are paid per unit of work done โ€” for example, per cubic meter of concrete placed or per square meter of wall finished.

c. Gainsharing and Profit Sharing

Some companies share part of the profit or cost savings with staff when a project performs better than expected.
This is common in big firms in the UK, USA, Australia, and Japan.

d. Performance-Based Contracts

Contractors themselves are paid based on performance โ€” not just completion.
Examples:
โ€ข โ€œTarget costโ€ contracts in the UK: If a contractor delivers below the agreed cost, savings are shared with the client.
โ€ข โ€œDesign-buildโ€ or โ€œturnkeyโ€ models link final payment to quality and functional performance.

๐Ÿšง3. Performance-Related Pay in Ethiopia and East Africa

a. Current reality

In Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, construction pay is still mostly time-based (daily, weekly, or monthly wages).
However, some elements of PRP exist โ€” especially in large projects or companies with foreign partnerships.

Examples:
โ€ข Site bonuses: When a project finishes early or meets milestones (especially in road and building works funded by international donors).
โ€ข Piece-rate work: Common among casual laborers (e.g., masons or painters paid per square meter or cubic meter).
โ€ข Engineer or supervisor incentives: Small allowances for meeting project schedules or maintaining safety standards.

b. Government and institutional influence
โ€ข In public projects, pay structures follow government salary scales, so PRP is limited.
โ€ข In private and international projects, PRP is more flexible โ€” often written into contracts or negotiated individually.
โ€ข Chinese and Turkish contractors working in Ethiopia often apply output-based systems or completion bonuses for key staff.

c. Cultural and structural challenges

1. Limited performance data: Hard to measure productivity accurately due to weak documentation and record systems.
2. Low awareness: Many workers are unfamiliar with PRP principles or fear unfair evaluation.
3. Payment delays: Incentives lose meaning if base pay isnโ€™t regular.
4. Collective work patterns: Construction tasks rely on teams, so individual assessment can be tricky.
5. Labor law limits: Some national labor laws donโ€™t clearly define or protect PRP systems.

๐Ÿšง4. Opportunities and Future Direction

Performance-related pay is slowly gaining attention in East Africa, especially as:
โ€ข Construction becomes more industrialized (mechanized, data-based).
โ€ข Private developers and international donors push for efficiency and accountability.
โ€ข Governments seek to reduce project delays and cost overruns.

๐Ÿ‘‰What is the shear strength?

๐Ÿ’ซThe shear strength of any material can be defined as the capacity of that material to resist those forces which cause the internal layers of the material structure to slide against each other in the direction of the force.

โบThe shear strength of the material can be computed in the either vertical or horizontal direction, by applying a force in the desired direction.

๐Ÿ‘‰Let Me Tell You About Cement

โญ๏ธThe recommended maximum time to store packed cement is 3 months from the date of manufacture if stored in typical site conditions.

โบWith ideal, moisture-proof storage (such as in an airtight container or a completely dry silo), it might last up to 6 months or even a year, but this is less common and strength loss is still a factor.

๐ŸšงWhy Cement Has a Limited Shelf Life

โบCement is highly hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air, which starts the chemical reaction (hydration) that causes it to harden.

โบOnce this process begins inside the bag, the cement loses its intended binding strength and performance.
Strength Loss Over Time
If stored for longer periods, the cement's strength decreases significantly:

๐ŸšงAfter 3 months: May lose 20โ€“30% of its original strength.
๐ŸšงAfter 6 months: May lose up to 40โ€“50% of its strength.
๐ŸšงAfter 12 months: May lose more than 50% of its strength.
When to Test or Discard

๐ŸทFor structural projects (e.g., foundations, beams): It is highly recommended to use fresh cement (within 3 months of the manufacturing date) to ensure structural integrity.

๐ŸทFor non-structural projects (e.g., patching, small garden walls): You may use older cement, provided it is still in a fine, free-flowing powder form without hard lumps, but it is best to perform a small test mix first to confirm it sets properly.

โบIf you notice hard lumps in the bag: The cement has likely absorbed too much moisture and should be discarded, as it will not perform as expected.
Always follow the "First In, First Out" (FIFO) principle when using cement from storage to ensure the oldest bags are used first.

๐Ÿ“B. Placement in Machine

โบPlace cube on CTM between plates.
โบEnsure cast/leveled face is on top (smooth face facing upwards).
โบCenter the cube properly.

๐Ÿ“C. Load Application

โบStart the machine.
Apply load gradually at a rate of: 140 kg/cmยฒ per minute (or ~2.9 kN/s).
โบContinue until cube fails/cracks.

๐Ÿท8. Calculations

โ‡๏ธFor a 150 mm cube:
Area = 150 ร— 150 = 22500 mmยฒ

โญ๏ธExample:
Load at failure = 450 kN
Strength = 450,000 N / 22,500 mmยฒ = 20 MPa

๐Ÿ“œ9. Reporting
Include:

โบMix ratio / grade
โบCube ID number
โบAge (7 or 28 days)
โบLoad at failure
โบCompressive strength
Average of 3 cubes
Any visual observations of cracks
