Modern surveying instruments can collect angles, distances, and coordinates rapidly, but electronically recorded observations are not automatically reliable.

Before new observations are incorporated into an established traverse network, surveyors verify that the measurements are consistent with the existing control and the required survey accuracy.

The work begins with checking the instrument itself.

The Total Station or GNSS receiver is confirmed to be suitable for the required accuracy, with appropriate calibration and operational checks completed.

For a Total Station, the surveyor checks the instrument setup carefully.

The instrument must be properly centered over the traverse station and accurately leveled.

The station identification, instrument height, prism height, prism constant, and measurement settings are also verified.

The backsight is then observed to confirm the orientation.

Where the survey procedure requires it, the direction is checked through additional observations rather than relying on a single sight.

Horizontal angles and distances to the new traverse station are then observed.

Important observations may be repeated, including observations on both faces of the instrument where appropriate.

The repeated results are compared to identify abnormal differences before the data are accepted.

GNSS observations require their own checks.

The receiver configuration, antenna information, observation method, correction source, coordinate reference system, and solution quality are reviewed.

Where GNSS is being connected to existing traverse control, the resulting coordinates are compared with the known control within the specified accuracy.

The new observations are also checked against the geometry of the existing network.

A new traverse connection may be observed from more than one control station, or the traverse may be closed onto established control.

These independent relationships provide stronger evidence that the new measurements are consistent with the network.

Any significant discrepancy is investigated before the observation is incorporated.

Surveyors review the original field data, station identification, orientation, instrument settings, observation conditions, and coordinate computations to determine whether the problem comes from the new observation or the existing control.

The objective is not simply to make the new measurements agree with the established network.

The observations must be independently supported and shown to satisfy the required accuracy before they become part of the control framework.

Once the observations pass the necessary checks, they can be incorporated into the traverse computation and, where appropriate, adjusted with the rest of the network.

This process protects the established control from being weakened by a single unreliable observation.

It also ensures that modern instruments improve the efficiency of traverse surveying without replacing the fundamental principles of independent verification and quality control.
