Cooper will also hold discussions regarding the Gaza Strip. In recent weeks, the U.S. administration has been pressuring Israel to move to the next phase. The “Board of Peace” announced this week that progress had been made in talks with Hamas.

Israel’s security cabinet will be required to approve the new framework and its timetable, which includes a phased Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, contingent on Hamas disarming and the entry of a technocratic government.

Turkish FM Hakan Fidan says the new defense pact between Turkey, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia is “technically the same as NATO’s Article 5” mutual-defense agreement.

The pact will include a ministerial committee similar to NATO’s, plus a general secretariat based in Saudi Arabia.

Fidan says Egypt could also join once technical issues are resolved.
