🇯🇵🇰🇷 The difficult relationship between Japan and South Korea.

✅ Last March Korean Premier Yoon went to Tokyo to meet his counterpart Kishida. The meeting left nothing written, but allowed to deepen common ground between the two Asian countries. If Japanese public opinion approved the meeting, the same cannot be said for Koreans, especially the families of the victims of the Japanese occupation during World War II, such as the sexual slavery of Korean women. The Korean business world has instead accepted the visit, seeing it as positive. The two prime ministers have agreed on high-tech trade agreements. However, economic agreements are not enough. Seoul considers the Japanese occupation a huge problem for diplomatic stabilisation between the two countries. And if the Japanese Liberal Party considers the issue ended in 1965, for the Korean population (less so for the political class) the historical problem is not solved. Not to mention how Japan in 2018 eliminated South Korea as a privileged trading partner.

🇨🇳🇰🇵 Today, the two countries are united by the threat from China and North Korea. And by the fact that they are two key nations for the US. But without a final peace treaty, Washington will not be able to bring South Korea into QUAD together with Japan.
