Morocco and the U.S. have now activated AMTEC (Africa Multidomain Training and Experimentation Center) in Tan-Tan—the first U.S.-linked facility of its kind in the Africa and Middle East region, providing a dedicated environment for testing and evaluating emerging military technologies, including long-range fires, autonomous systems, communications and advanced sensing.

Its first live-fire demonstration was conducted in August.

Iraq’s new Syria–Iraq oil pipeline is expected to take around four years and cost at least $15 billion, with an entirely new integrated system broadly following the old Kirkuk–Baniyas route; the United States says it would have an initial capacity of 2 million barrels per day, meaning that figure is not necessarily a hard maximum.

The 45-day congressional review period for removing Syria from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list ends this Saturday, August 22, 2026. If Congress does not block it by then, the designation will be automatically removed under U.S. law, easing restrictions on foreign assistance, defense exports, dual-use technology and international financial transactions.

The Syrian Ministry of Defense, in collaboration with international aviation institutes and with assistance from Turkey, is actively training thousands of new pilot recruits.

Although it will not enhance Syria's military strength in the short term, it will provide the flexibility to potentially procure fourth and 4.5-generation fighter jets from China or the European Union's Eurofighter program.

Israeli Prime Minister’s Office:

"Israel and Syria have agreed to maintain the status quo regarding security matters, a status quo that Syria was about to violate by allowing Turkish forces to operate at an airbase near Aleppo.

Israel repeatedly warned Syria that such a deployment would pose a threat to Israel's security. Syria chose to ignore these warnings.

Israel will not tolerate threats to its security, and welcomes a return to the status quo."

Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs:

We deny claims of an agreement between Syria and Israel that involves a specific security arrangement.

Israel targeted the Abu al-Zuhur airport despite being informed that there were no foreign forces present.

We cannot enter into an agreement that hinders the development of civilian and military institutions.

“The West gets excited about democracy shamelessy and hypocritically, but when it comes down to reality they pounce on us like savage predators”
Netanyahu:

We have made it clear that we will not tolerate a Turkish military presence in Syria, and it seems they did not hear us well.

Therefore, we have taken steps to ensure they understand this better.

Middle East Eye:

A Turkish technical team has been tasked with repairing the runway and control tower at Abu al-Zuhur military airport.

There is no military presence at the base, and the last team tasked with rebuilding the base was there two days ago.

Turkey is assisting the Syrian army in building military bases throughout the country, and there are no specific plans targeting Israel.

Ankara is seeking to rebuild a strong Syrian army capable of defending the country.
