The hopelessness spread when the UN climate panel said that emissions must be halved in twelve years. But it does not stop there.

It is not mentioned in a single word in the summaries, neither for politicians nor decision-makers. Nowhere is the whole truth about what it takes to stop warming at one and a half degrees or two .
All reporting in the world media on what is needed has been about energy efficiency, renewable energy production, cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and how we must remove CO₂ from the atmosphere.
But for those who are not content with reading summaries, another controversial "measure" has emerged.

We must soon become fewer
In addition to cutting emissions and streamlining, the explosive population growth must be stopped - at least according to the assessments made by the climate panel itself. And it has to happen fast.

- In order to be able to limit warming to 1.5 degrees, we must in these calculations not only cut emissions by 45 percent by 2030. Population growth must stop by 2050, and then the world population must be reduced, says climate researcher Bjørn Samset at CICERO - Center for Climate Research .

On Tuesday evening, Samset will present the climate panel's findings at Aftenposten's climate conference.

- So it does not hold with huge emission cuts?
- No. And population growth is often the elephant in space in a climate context. Everyone knows that with such great growth as we have now, the climate goals will be even tougher. But reversing that trend is at least as difficult as cutting emissions, he says.
We are now just over 7.6 billion people in the world and are becoming about 83 million more each year.

Not talked about
Samset does not know why this was not highlighted when the climate panel presented its report a couple of weeks ago.

- No, this has not been communicated at all. But it is very important. The more we become, the more energy society needs. And that makes the cuts needed in CO2 emissions even more dramatic.
Today, much of Africa's population growth is located. Therefore, it becomes important both to make CO2-free energy available there, and to increase the standard of living. We know this will slow down population growth in the long run, according to Samset.

Impossible without stopping population growth
- So development in poor countries is at least as important a climate measure as CO cuts, electric cars and solar energy?

-Yes absolutely. It is impossible to stop global warming with solar energy and emissions trading alone. We need a total social change. The whole world has to think and do things in a completely different way than today.

- So the climate fight is even more difficult than most people have experienced?

- Yes, says Samset. #depopulation
