📺 New Project Brings Android Apps to the Linux Desktop
The dream of being able to run Android apps on Linux distributions like Ubuntu is a step closer to reality, thanks to a promising new open-source project called ‘SPURV‘.

Superficially, SPURV is similar to Bluestacks, an emulator that can run Android apps on Windows desktops in ‘windowed’ mode. It creates a virtualised Android device on your Linux system. Android apps are installed to and run through this layer.

Ubuntu has full access to your Google Account

Beware of this security bug if you are using Chromium Browser on Ubuntu

I am not the kind of dude who's too nerdy about IT security in general but I reviewed my Google Account's security today because I happened to land there as I wanted to change some other Google setting. Now what I saw literally shocked me.

I happen to use a handful of apps where I use my Google account but the permissions are limited to what they do (for example, the Car Driving Simulator app can only access the Google Play Service and nothing else). However, this app called "Ubuntu" has full access to my Google account which I thought was odd.

Though I happen to use an Ubuntu OS (18.04 LTS to be precise), they don't seem to be the kind who will hijack permissions to their users' Google accounts. Further research led me to this and this which are eye opening posts in this regard, and then it stuck me that I also use the Chromium Browser installed right from the Ubuntu repos using apt!

I also remember signing into Chromium browser so as to sync my bookmarks, etc. with my Android phone. Just to verify, I removed the access to Ubuntu and for sure, the sync feature on my browser suddenly stopped and I was temporarily signed out. So, I signed into Chromium again and that permission (Ubuntu Has full access!) came up again at its place. Now, I understand that its Chromium and not Ubuntu who is given permissions here, but there are a few problems (or rather a bug) with this workflow:

Last phase of the desktop wars?

The two most intriguing developments in the recent evolution of the Microsoft Windows operating system are Windows System for Linux (WSL) and the porting of their Microsoft Edge browser to Ubuntu.

For those of you not keeping up, WSL allows unmodified Linux binaries to run under Windows 10. No emulation, no shim layer, they just load and go.

Microsoft developers are now landing features in the Linux kernel to improve WSL. And that points in a fascinating technical direction. To understand why, we need to notice how Microsoft’s revenue stream has changed since the launch of its cloud service in 2010.

Ten years later, Azure makes Microsoft most of its money. The Windows monopoly has become a sideshow, with sales of conventional desktop PCs (the only market it dominates) declining. Accordingly, the return on investment of spending on Windows development is falling. As PC volume sales continue to fall off , it’s inevitably going to stop being a profit center and turn into a drag on the business.

Looked at from the point of view of cold-blooded profit maximization, this means continuing Windows development is a thing Microsoft would prefer not to be doing. Instead, they’d do better putting more capital investment into Azure – which is widely rumored to be running more Linux instances than Windows these days.

Our third ingredient is Proton. Proton is the emulation layer that allows Windows games distributed on Steam to run over Linux. It’s not perfect yet, but it’s getting close. I myself use it to play World of Warships on the Great Beast.

The thing about games is that they are the most demanding possible stress test for a Windows emulation layer, much more so than business software. We may already be at the point where Proton-like technology is entirely good enough to run Windows business software over Linux. If not, we will be soon.

sudo-rs Affected By Multiple Security Vulnerabilities - Impacting Ubuntu 25.10

The #Ubuntu 25.10 transition to using some #Rust system utilities continues proving quite rocky. Beyond some early performance issues with Rust Coreutils, breakage for some executables, and broken unattended upgrades due to a Rust Coreutils bug, it's also sudo-rs now causing Ubuntu developers some headaches. There are two moderate security issues affecting sudo-rs, the Rust version of sudo being used by Ubuntu 25.10.

Initially opened as a private bug report last week was [sudo-rs] Update to address two moderate vulnerabilities.
"Upstream will release a fix for two moderate vulnerabilities targeting Friday (Nov 7 2025).

The expected coordinated release of this fix is Monday (Nov 10 2025).

One of these vulnerabilities is CVE-2025-64170."
That bug report has since been made public with the upstream sudo-rs fixes being committed. Ubuntu 25.10 is also seeing a stable release update (SRU) to address these two security issues.

One of the patches is to prevent the sudo password from being leaked in case of a timeout or sudo being killed. Another patch is to use enum for the feedback parameter. Another patch to ensure feedback is always erased before exiting the read unbuffered code. Another change is also made to not treat backspace as a password character when the password is empty.

I haven't seen any of the CVE reports made public yet for these sudo-rs security issues, but even alone the one for potentially leaking the sudo password in case of timeout or #sudo being killed is significant.

Released now is sudo-rs 0.2.10 with the latest fixes and other changes. The sudo-rs package for Ubuntu 25.10 is being SRU'ed to users.
