Largest mass demonstration in Hong Kong for years

With a new extradition law, China is trying to exert more political influence on Hong Kong. The population of the autonomous region is alarmed and hundreds of thousands are taking to the streets against its own Peking loyal government.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters marched in Hong Kong on Sunday in a display of anger and fear over a government proposal to allow extraditions to mainland China.

Turnout at the demonstration in Hong Kong, a city of more than seven million, could exceed the half-million who attended an annual rally in 2014 not long before a pro-democracy sit-in that shut down major roadways for almost three months.

Organizers said they hoped such numbers would show the breadth of disagreement with the plan, which has stirred worries that people in Hong Kong, including foreign visitors, would be sent to face trial in Communist Party-controlled courts in mainland China.

Kim Dotcom Predicts NZ Supreme Court Will Rule in Favor of Extradition

Kim Dotcom is predicting that the New Zealand Supreme Court will decide in favor of extraditing him to the United States. The Megaupload founder says that he has faith in at least one judge on the panel, claiming that she knows the "U.S. govt is a rogue operator" and "knows what her fellow Judges are doing and why."

The now-infamous Megaupload case has been treading a tortuous legal path for more than eight years in New Zealand.

The United States Government wants Kim Dotcom, Mathias Ortmann, Bram van der Kolk, and Finn Batato, physically delivered as quickly as possible, to face what has been billed as the largest copyright infringement lawsuit of all time.

After several lower courts determined that the Megaupload defendants should indeed be extradited to the United States, in June 2019 the New Zealand Supreme Court heard the hugely controversial matter. The β€˜Megaupload Four’ are hoping that the country’s highest court will see things differently and deny the United States an opportunity to try the men on US soil.

When we spoke to the serial entrepreneur last year, Dotcom wasn’t optimistic.

β€œI expect a 3:2 majority in favor of extradition because three of the five judges were appointed by the National Party and the former Attorney General who was responsible for the actions taken against me in New Zealand. This is a political case and it will most likely be a political judgment,” he said.

UK Judge to Give Decision on Assange Extradition Early Next Year

The British judge presiding over the extradition trial of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange said on Thursday that she would give her verdict on the case early next year. Judge Vanessa Baraitser said she would decide whether or not Assange will be extradited to the US on January 4th. Thursday was the 18th day of the hearing and the final day of witness testimony.

If Assange is extradited to the US, he could face up to 175 years in prison for exposing US war crimes. The US indicted the WikiLeaks founder on 17 counts of espionage and one count of conspiring to commit computer intrusion. The charges revolve around US State Department communications and documents on the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan published by WikiLeaks in 2010.

The charges against Assange essentially criminalize receiving and publishing classified information.

A group of legal professionals, known as Lawyers for Assange, sent a letter to the UK government calling for the immediate release of the publisher. The group warned that Assange would not see a fair trial in the US. The letter said all of the crimes Assange is accused of are standard journalistic practices, and if he is extradited, it would gravely endanger press freedom. The letter was endorsed by hundreds of politicians, parliament members, and heads of state from around the world.

Last week, the Old Bailey heard testimony that Assange has been diagnosed with Aspergers, severe depression, and other conditions that put him at risk of suicide. Medical experts said if Assange is extradited to the US, it will increase his risk of suicide.

On Tuesday, Maureen Baird, a former warden of a high-security prison in New York, told the court that Assange would likely be held in isolation if extradited due to the national security nature of the case. If convicted, Assange would likely be held in isolation in a supermax prison in Colorado, known as ADX, which is home to notorious criminals. Baird warned of the adverse effects isolation causes on the mental health of inmates.

Julian Assange: Judge blocks US extradition order

The WikiLeaks founder can stay in the UK, a court ruled on Monday.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange will not be extradited to the US from the UK, a judge in London ruled Monday. District Judge Vanessa Baraitser blocked the extradition request on the basis of Assange's mental health.

Assange is wanted in the US on espionage charges and faces an 18-count indictment accusing him of conspiring to hack military databases to publish classified information about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If convicted, Assange could be handed a 175-year jail sentence, although the US government has said he would likely face a sentence of between four and six years.

In her ruling, Baraitser said that based on evidence of self-harm and suicidal thoughts, Assange would be likely to try and kill himself if subjected to the US prison system. She was not satisfied that the procedures described by the US would prevent Assange from suicide, she added.

Authorities in the US will appeal the decision.
