Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has accused Iran of attacking two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman this week, a move which raised fears of a broader conflict in the region.
In an interview published in Sunday's Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, the prince is quoted as saying Iran did not respect Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's visit to Tehran and replied to his efforts by attacking a Japanese-flagged tanker.
The paper also quoted the crown prince as saying his country does "not want a war in the region" but "won't hesitate to deal with any threats to our people, our sovereignty, our territorial integrity and our vital interests."
Meanwhile, crew members of the oil tanker Front Altair, one of two vessels attacked this week, landed in Dubai Saturday. A company spokesman said the 23 crew members were well-treated by Iranian authorities.
The other damaged tanker, the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous, has been towed to the Emirati port of Fujairah.
A deadly day Saturday in Somalia and Kenya with as many as 27 people killed in separate incidents.
At least 10 people were killed and 23 others injured when a car bomb exploded at a checkpoint close to the parliament building in Mogadishu. The militant group al-Shabab immediately claimed responsibility.
In a separate incident, a car bomb went off on the road to Mogadishu airport but no one was injured in the blast.
In the central Somali town of Galkacyo, 720 kilometers from Mogadishu, nine people were killed in a revenge attack for the Islamist group's killing of a local policeman.
Across the border in Kenya, at least 8 Kenyan policemen were killed when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb. 👇📙 ادامه

President Donald Trump says that he called off military strikes against Iran Thursday night just minutes before they were set to occur.
AP Washington correspondent Sagar Meghani has details on the president's move from the Pentagon.
"Cocked & loaded," the president says the Pentagon was ready to retaliate after Iran downed an American drone. But he tweets he called off the strikes ten minutes before they were to be launched after being told 150 people could die.
The tweet raises several questions such as how the president could only have learned about potential casualties minutes ahead of time. Military planners here at the Pentagon would typically have shared that much earlier.
The pullbacks are another indication the president does not want to escalate the clash with Iran though he is not ruling out future strikes.

In a related story, U.S. airlines have been warned to avoid Iranian airspace. But as Reuters correspondent Julian Satterthwaite reports, some European and Asian airlines are choosing to do the same without being told.
The move comes after Iran shot down a U.S Navy drone. Washington and Tehran can't agree where that incident took place. The U.S. says the drone was downed in international airspace over the Gulf. Iran says the drone violated its airspace.
On Friday, it said it refrained from shooting down an accompanying U.S. patrol plane at the same time. It says a P8, an adapted 737 airliner, also violated its airspace.
Whatever the truth, it's alarming for airlines.

On Wall Street, a down day Friday, with all three major indices closing in negative territory. The Dow and the S&P lost point one three percent. The NASDAQ dropped point two four percent.

The head of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Kevin McAleenan, is disputing reports of the inadequate conditions in crowded detention centers along the U.S.-Mexico border. At the same time, some member of Congress are calling for improved treatment of migrants in U.S. custody.
McAleenan and U.S. Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib appeared on ABC's "This Week" Sunday. VOA's Marcus Harton has more.
McAleenan said reports of unsanitary conditions and inadequate food and water were unsubstantiated.
"So we've done a tremendous amount. Since December 30th when we last talked about this, we had 20 medical providers in our facilities border-wide. Now we have over 200. We've built soft-sided temporary facilities."
"I mean what I saw was a number of people at 14, up to 14 in one area sleeping on the floors, a number of them saying they didn't bathe within 15 days."
Representative Rashida Tlaib was part of a congressional delegation that toured the Clint, Texas, border station last week.

Raids targeting some 2,000 undocumented immigrants to the United States were expected to be under way Sunday as promised by the Trump administration last week. Raids were expected to focus on nine major cities including Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City.
In the days leading up to the raids, Democratic lawmakers and others have been informing immigrants of their rights and advising them not to open their doors for ICE agents unless the agents show a court ordered warrant.
New York City Council member Carlos Menchaca says activists were helping educate immigrants on their rights ??? and two attempted raids in his neighborhood on Saturday.
"The message of knowing your rights, not to open the door, not to speak to ICE agents, is working. Those were two unsuccessful attempts to move people from our neighborhood and so that's what's working and that's we're gonna try to do the rest of this week."
Trump supporters see the raids as the fulfilment of a campaign promise to crack down on immigrants while critics call the raids inhumane.
The former British ambassador to the United States believed President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal was an act of what he called "diplomatic vandalism" against Trump's predecessor Barack Obama. That's according to newly leaked diplomatic cables from the diplomat, Kim Darroch, who resigned last Wednesday.
The Mail on Sunday published Darroch's message back to London days after he resigned and a week after the newspaper published other leaked cables. In earlier memos, the diplomat described the United States leader as "inept" and his administration as "uniquely dysfunctional."
Darroch's resignation came up after he said his posting in Washington had become untenable with the disclosure of those cables.

The National Hurricane Center said Sunday that Tropical Storm Barry has weakened to a tropical depression as it moves over western Louisiana, but the rain is expected to continue into Monday. Some areas have received as much as 50 centimeters of rain already.
Flooding is a danger and Governor John Bel Edwards and President Trump have both declared [the state of Louisiana] a state of emergency.
Police in Hong Kong fought with protesters as they broke up a demonstration by thousands of people demanding the resignation of the semi-autonomous Chinese territory's chief executive and an investigation into [compli...] complaints of police violence.

Scuffles broke out at the end of the mainly peaceful protests in northern Hong Kong district of Sha Tin when police started clearing streets after nightfall.
Some protesters retreated into a shopping complex where they and police hit each other with clubs and umbrellas.
While it's unclear how many protesters were arrested, the violence wound down towards midnight as the remaining protesters left the area.
The demonstration added to an outpouring of grievances this year against the former British colony's leaders who critics complain are eroding Hong Kong's freedoms and autonomy and are more responsive to the Beijing government than to the territory's people.
