π² Some basic solutions for increasing our ability to control our mind
π² Many of our worship acts help to strengthen our ability to think and concentrate
ππΌ #ControllingMyMind (28)
β Two important indicators for evaluating our ability to control our mind are: 1. being able to keep our mind focused on a subject 2. when something distracts us, being able to change our thinking and bring our mind back to the subject we wanted to think about.
βHow can we gain this ability to focus? It is difficult to pay attention to sublime subjects such as "remembering God" during prayer. But we can have a program for spending time and thinking about certain good topics, such as Godβs blessings, Godβs kindness or any other topic that stimulates our thinking and is to our benefit and enjoyable to think about.
βWe can help ourselves to think by reading the biographies of the Friends of God, history books, supplications narrated from the Household of the Prophet (as), or above all, recite the Qur'an and think about it.
βAnother way to increase our ability to focus is to participate in the meetings where God is spoken about and everyone is thinking about this same subject. Many such worship acts are actually ways for us to gain the ability to control our mind.
βAnother thing we should do and is interesting too, is self-evaluation! This is so important that itβs been said, βOne who does not evaluate his actions every day is not one of us (the Household of the Prophet).β [Kafi, vol. 2, p. 453]
βWe can get used to concentrating on a certain topic with a program such as self-evaluation, which must be done daily. This focusing our attention without using any external tools or factors is very useful.
βContinuity in any program - especially in programs concerning the mind β is very important. It is so important that it has been said if you set a program for yourself but arenβt able to do it on time, be sure to do it later. [Usul Tisβa Ashar, p. 237]
βIf during these regular, daily programs youβve set for yourself you are able to focus and use your mind correctly, you will be able to focus on a topic or stop thinking about it when you need to do so at other times.

πWhy are some of Godβs commands obligatory?
Why should a person like obligatory deeds more than recommended deeds? Why should a person want a deed to become obligatory for him first then do it? For every moment that you do a deed in order to get closer to God, if that action is obligatory, it has more value than the moments when you do that same deed when it is recommended. Why is it like this?
It is due to the fact that when we do a recommended deed, our egotism is present more. However, when a deed is obligatory, you cannot really say, βThat was me! I did it.β Since it was obligatory, you had to do it and could not say, βGod, I could have avoided doing this deed.β
This is where a personβs egotism crumbles. Of course, we are talking about a faithful person for whom Godβs commands automatically take him toward action. Otherwise, the unbelievers who are not concerned with divine commands are outside of our discussion.
