🔻How to be a thinker?

🔸Sometimes our #lifestyle does not allow us to #think; it prevents thinking. Music, various kinds of entertainment, and anything that attracts a person’s attention to itself too much, prevent thinking. Even listening to too many speeches prevents thinking. If you read your messages every minute whenever you receive one, you won’t be able to become a thinker! Decide to read your messages at a certain time, for example, between 8 and 9 pm.

🔸Psychologists say, “Whatever entertains a person and prevents him or her from thinking, causes one to become less intelligent. One example is being used to watching too much TV.” Therefore, if you see that a film or a TV serial is very attractive and entertaining for you, don’t watch it!

🔸God says, “If you want to talk with Me privately, come at midnight! Speeches, gatherings for reading eulogies, prayer meetings, mourning ceremonies, speakers and the readers of eulogies can help you to get going. But, come at #dawn, think yourself and talk to Me.” In the same way, the verse, “…and who think about the creation of the heavens and the earth…” (Qur’an, 3: 191) should be read at dawn.

🔻Crying while praying is beautiful. But, thinking about the text of a supplication is sometimes more valuable.

🔻Out of curiosity, let’s study the text of one of Imam Ali’s (‘a) talks with God.

👉🏼A Message on the Occasion of the Beginning of the Month of Sha’ban

🔸Basically, supplications can be read in several ways. One time, a person can study a supplication due to his #curiosity. One time, a person can read a supplication in order to #think. And one time, a person can read a supplication with tears and #crying.

🔸When a person hears that a private conversation between the Commander of the Faithful, Ali (‘a), and God has been recorded somewhere, this should spark one’s curiosity. A person should take a look to see what this conversation was. Imagine you are behind the door of a room where Ali (‘a) is talking with God, and his words can be heard. If you are allowed to hear his voice, won’t you become curious to know what subjects the Commander of the Faithful (‘a) raises when talking with God?

🔸A prayer that has reached us from an Imam is in fact the essence of his faith, piety and understanding. The #Shabaniah_Supplication is the essence of the spiritual existence of the Commander of the Faithful (‘a). The phrases of this supplication are very thought-provoking. They can compel us to think. If a person is used to thinking a lot, the best text for thought is this supplication.

🔸One of the most virtuous worship acts is thinking, but how should we think? One way is for us to place this supplication in front of ourselves. After we have studied it along with its translation and become familiar with its topics, then we should go back and read it again while thinking about it.

🔸Of course, crying when reading a supplication is very beautiful in itself too. However, thinking is not a small matter either. Sometimes it’s even more valuable than crying. After studying and thinking, if a supplication was appealing to a person, he/she can read some phrases of this supplication again in a quiet place like a private, whispered conversation between God and him/herself. If fact, talking with God is a private conversation with Him.

🔲 Awaken your good points with the help of your thinking.
🔲 If you leave your thoughts to wander freely, they will go astray.

👉🏼 #ControllingMyMind (6)

A person usually wants something more when he/she doesn’t have it. Sometimes he can’t even think of anything else. A person who keeps thinking and concentrating on what he doesn’t have will become obsessed.

Imam Hasan (as) said, “If you want something from the world but don’t get it, imagine that this wish never came to your mind.” [Kashf al-Ghumma, vol. 1, p. 572] He also said, “I encourage you to #think constantly and deeply, because thinking is the foundation for every goodness.” [Tanbih al-Khawatir, vol. 1, p. 52]

“A believer is drowned in thinking,” Imam Ali (as) said. [Nahj al-Balaghah, wisdom no. 333] In the same way that the ability to #concentrate needs practice, #thinking well also needs practice. If you leave your thoughts to wander freely, they will go astray. When some people think, they think of longings, jealousy, greed, and plans that will destroy them. Never busy your mind with thoughts about what you do not have!

Controlling one’s mind entails at least five tasks that you should be able to do:
1. Think and pay attention to any subject that you choose, not any subject that grabs your attention.
2. Think for as long as you want about any subject you choose
3. Think deeply about one subject, and this is difficult to do
4. Distract your thinking from any subject you don’t wish to think about, e.g., if others pull your thinking to a topic, be able to stop thinking about it.
5. Not allow vain or evil thoughts to attract your thinking for you to need to divert your thinking later on.

You should be able to not allow your #attention to be pulled toward anything without your permission. You should think good thoughts and look from a positive angle at things that usually bring bad thoughts and distract you. These are skills the prophets had! Some of the Disciples came across a dog’s carcass. The first thing that caught their attention was its stench, but Prophet Jesus (as) said, “It has such white teeth!” [Tanbih al-Khawatir, vol. 1, p. 117]
