➖People can usually concentrate deeply on a subject for only a moment and they are soon distracted. They do not have the strength to keep #focused on one subject. But if we can control our mind, we will be able to pay careful attention to a good topic for a while. If you can #control your mind, you will not pay attention to worthless things. Imam Ali (as) said, "Increase your worth by not paying attention to worthless affairs." [Tuhaf al-Uqul, p. 224]
➖Many people watch movies and serials on TV. When you ask them, "What effect does this film have on you? What will this information that is entering your mind do to you?" they say, "I don’t know!" The Qur'an says, “One should look at one's own food.” [80:24] This is not just referring to the food one eats [according to the traditions]. A person should pay attention to what he sees, hears, and the information that enters his/her mind.
➖The best place for us to use the ability to control our mind is when praying. The Prophet (s) said, “If a person’s thinking and heart are focused on God during his prayer (and he controls his mind), he will be (pure) like the day when he came into this world when he finishes his prayer.” [Mustadrak al-Wasail, vol. 4, p. 102]
➖Paying attention to God with all one’s heart is something Imam Ali (as) was able to do. If we pay attention to God with even a part of our heart, we will benefit and gain much. Ayatollah Bahjat was asked, “What should we do to be able to pay attention to God when praying?” He said, “Whenever you become distracted, bring your attention back to your prayer again.” Now, if one has a problem, should he think about it when praying? Ayatollah Bahjat said that if you do not think about your problem when praying, you will see that your problem will be solved easier after you prayer.
➖Imam Sadiq (as) said, “There is no believer who pays attention to God with his heart in prayer, other than that God pays attention to him, loves him and causes others to love him too.” [Thawab al-Amaal, p. 135]
