ββπ° Libra: Facebook confirms its cryptocurrency launching in 2020
#Libra is designed not to be a speculative asset, like #Bitcoin, but a form of digital money backed by a reserve of assets.
The company has formed the nonprofit Libra Association with 27 other partners to oversee Libra and its development. The partnership includes venture capital firms, nonprofit organizations, #cryptocurrency firms, and massive corporate financial, telecommunications, and technology service providers, including #Coinbase, #Mastercard, #Visa, #eBay, #PayPal, #Stripe, #Spotify, #Uber, #Lyft, and #Vodafone.
While the Libra Association will have members based globally, it will be headquartered in Geneva, Switzerlandπ¨π
Facebook has a business incentive to build on top of the Libra #blockchain, and itβs launching its own subsidiary to do just that called #Calibra (see the GIF below - Credit: Facebook). According to Kevin Weil, Facebook's VP of Product, Calibra will live inside of Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp at launch, but will also have a standalone iOS and Android app.

β‘οΈ Bitcoin Uses More Electricity Than Switzerland
Among other things, #Bitcoin has been criticized for price volatility, use in illegal transactions and thefts from exchanges. It has also proven highly controversial for the sheer amount of energy it requires. The University of Cambridge has released a new online tool that estimates the level of electricity the #CryptoCurrency network uses and compares it with other entities.
It estimates that Bitcoin uses 61.76 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricty per year, more than many countries and around 0.28 percent of worldwide electricity consumption.
The Czech Republic π¨πΏ consumes an estimated 62.34 TWh while Switzerland π¨π consumes 58.46 TWh annually by comparison. In fact, if Bitcoin was a country, it would be the 41st most-energy-demanding nation on earth.

π Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day!
On May 22, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas. At the time, it cost about Β£10. Today? About Β£250 million.
To celebrate how far Bitcoin has come β and commemorate historyβs most expensive pizzas β letβs take a look at 4 things 10,000 BTC could buy in 2021.
- 28 million large cheese pizzas
- 165,000 moped scooters (for local delivery)
- 3 commercial airplanes (for coast-to-coast delivery)
- 14 billion after-dinner mints
If thatβs how much #Bitcoin has changed since 2010, just think how different things could look in the next 11 years. Hopefully pizza still tastes the same.
