โโ๐คซ The Rise of Dark Social
Thereโs no shortage of discussion around the decline of sharing on #SocialMedia. But itโs not that users are sharing less, theyโre sharing differently.
Social media feeds have become overcrowded with content, and consumers are privacy-aware more than ever.
Both these factors are contributing to the rise of a not-so-new space: #DarkSocial. Dark Social means private messaging apps, SMS or emails.
Based on a research by GlobalWebIndex, in UK and US, when consumers have something to share, theyโre more likely to head to dark social channels to do so (63%) rather than open social media platforms (54%). Whatโs even more revealing is that around 20% share only via these channels, with #WhatsApp and #FacebookMessenger the go-to services.

๐ Facebook Inc. Dominates the Social Media Landscape
When people think of #Facebook as a company, they mostly think of it synonymously with Facebook the social network. However, Facebook Inc. is much more than that, as todayโs chart nicely illustrates. With #WhatsApp, #Instagram and of course the namesake Facebook and #FacebookMessenger, the company owns four of the worldโs largest social media / messaging services.
Facebook alone is used by more than 2 billion people per month and both WhatsApp and Messenger also have surpassed the billion user mark, according to company data aggregated by DataReportal. #Tencent, the Chinese company behind #WeChat, Qzone and messenger QQ also boasts more than two billion users in total, but it still doesnโt come close to matching Facebookโs global footprint.
