A vulnerability discovered in #WhatsApp is being exploited to inject commercial spyware onto #Android and #iOS phones by simply calling the target - even if you don't pick up.
Once installed, the spyware can turn on a phoneโs camera and mic, scan emails and messages, and collect the userโs location data. WhatsApp is urging its 1.5 billion global users to update the app immediately to close the security hole.
The vulnerability exists in the following versions of WhatsApp:
- WhatsApp for Android prior to v2.19.134
- WhatsApp Business for Android prior to v2.19.44
- WhatsApp for iOS prior to v2.19.51
- WhatsApp Business for iOS prior to v2.19.51
- WhatsApp for Windows Phone prior to v2.18.348

#WhatsApp topped the list with the most downloads last quarter with more than 223 million new installs. The full ranking of the top 10 most downloaded publishers is above. App download estimates are from Sensor Towerโs Store Intelligence platform.
#FacebookMessenger was the second best performing app by downloads worldwide in Q1 2019 with close to 209 million installs. The next highest performing app was #TikTok, followed by #Facebook and #Instagram.
The top 10 apps were the same as the previous quarter, with the top five all retaining their rankings from Q4 2018. Facebook once again had four of the top five apps. Video editing app Biugo and photo editing app PicsArt entered the top 20 apps worldwide for the first time in Q1. Advertising revenues from mobile devices continue to grow faster than the overall market, with mobile increasing its revenue share to 65.1% in 2018.
As consumers continue to shift their viewing behaviour, advertisers have followed them. On a YoY (year-over-year) basis, mobile internet advertising revenues increased 39.7%, increasing its share of total revenues from 56.7% in FY 2017 to 65.1% in FY 2018. Reflecting the industryโs overall growth is a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) over the past 10 years of 16.8% which over the past few years has been largely driven by the growth of mobile. The rapid growth of the mobile #advertising platform has resulted in a CAGR of 53.8% over the past five years. Mobile revenues continue to benefit from advancements in single-click eCommerce, creative ad formats and placements on social media sites.

Social marketers have a good idea which #SocialMedia platforms to use in order to connect with their target audience. Aligned with consumer behaviours, 89% of marketers say they use #Facebook as part of their brandโs social strategy.
While Facebook reigns supreme, itโs worth taking a closer look at which social platforms are most popular among certain age groups. Facebook, for example, is the primary platform where members of Generation X Like or follow brands (77%), but for members of Generation Z, #Instagram takes the cake (69%).

Last week, #Facebook published its third Community Standards Enforcement Report which shows the efforts the company is making to curb and remove controversial content. Between October 2018 and March 2019, Facebook said it removed 3.39 billion fake accounts, twice the number detected and removed in the previous six-month period. It is also more than a billion more than the 2.37 billion people who actively use Facebook each month.
Facebook is trying to fight mass account creations using a combination of #AI and human monitoring. Facebook claims that the vast majority of fake accounts disabled within minutes of their creation.

The most downloaded Food & Drink category app worldwide for April 2019 was #UberEats with close to 8 million installs, which represented a more than 2x YoY (year-over-year) increase from April 2018. #Zomato was the second most installed #Food & Drink category app worldwide last year with more than 6 million estimated first-time downloads, which represented a more than 3x increase from April 2018.
