โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ“ฑ New iPhones Outside the US

There's no doubt about the increase in the price of #Apple's new iPhone every year, but for the first time, an #iPhone can cost a US๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ customer $1,449. However, compared to other countries in the world, this still is cheap.
When exported to Japan๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต, the price will rise by 2%, but even that's not a lot. The British๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง and German๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช customers, respectively, should pay about 130% and 132% of the price of an iPhone in the US.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ“ฑ The Difference: iOS vs Android

Yesterday, #Apple rolled out #iOS 12, the latest version of its mobile operating system.

Unlike #Android users who are often stuck with the version that comes pre-installed with their device, iPhone and iPad users iPhone can count on their devices getting new software for at least a couple of years. That's why they often rush to update to the latest version of OS available.

As the following chart illustrates, 95% of iOS devices currently run some version of iOS 11 (originally released in September 2017) or iOS 10 (September 2016).
Last year's Android version Oreo on the other hand is installed on less than 15% of all active devices, while more than half of all Android devices run on a system released in October 2015 or earlier. As a consequence, iOS app developers find a rather unified playing field while Android developers have to work with a deeply fragmented system.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿค– Android's Dominance

Ten years ago, on September 23, 2008, the T-Mobile G1 made its debut, marking the birth hour of #Android. More than a year after #Apple had released the first #iPhone, Androidโ€™s debut wasnโ€™t as spectacular and, as opposed to the iPhone, the first Android device still had a physical keyboard. But #Googleโ€™s open approach to building a mobile platform quickly proved to be successful and it took less than three years for Android to become the number 1 platform in the booming smartphone market.

โ€‹โ€‹๐ŸŽง Which Music Streaming Services?

According to Verto Analytics, so-called Music Lovers, the top 20% of all US ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ adults (ages 18+), based on the amount of time they spend per month online with #music brands and content, love Spotify.

#Spotify has a 48% reach among Music Lovers, who engage in an average of 124 sessions per month with the brand.
#Pandora Radio (recently acquired by SiriusXM for $3.5 billion) comes in second, with a 43.5% reach. Music Lovers rack up an average of 81 sessions per month engaging with Pandora Radio.
#Apple's iTunes comes in third with a 42% reach, and an average of 35 sessions per month.

โ€‹โ€‹๏ฃฟ Apple Stops Sharing Unit Sales Figures for Its Products

During its Q4 2018 earnings call, #Apple made a surprise announcement, dealing a major blow to analysts and data enthusiasts such as ourselves: going forward, the company will not be sharing unit sales figures for its products. For the past few years, analysts and investors have tended to focus their attention on one number, #iPhone sales, and Apple apparently no longer wants its entire business to be reduced to that one indicator.

When smartphone sales (naturally) started to slow down due to market saturation and slower technological progress, Apple decided to delve even further into the premium segment, bringing its average iPhone selling price to unprecedented heights and reaccelerating growth in its iPhone business. Therefore, Apple wants us to focus on the number that is more likely to be positive going forward.

โ€‹โ€‹๐Ÿ“ฑ Your Phone's Radiation

For most people nowadays, their #smartphone is within arm's reach 24 hours a day. It's in their pocket while they're at work, it's in their hand on the train ride home and it's on their bedside table as they go to sleep. With this level of proximity and usage, many can't quite shake the niggling feeling that they might be risking damage to themselves in the long run. While conclusive longitudinal research on the effects of cell phone radiation is still hard to come by, for those looking to hedge their bets, this infographic shows the phones that emit the most radiation when held to the ear while calling.

The German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (Bundesamt fรผr Strahlenschutz) has a comprehensive database of #smartphones - new and old - and the level of radiation they emit. Following the criteria set for this chart (see footnotes), the current smartphone creating the highest level of radiation is the Mi A1 from Chinese vendor Xiaomi. In fact, the top list is dominated by handsets made by Chinese companies, with #Xiaomi, #OnePlus, #Huawei and #ZTE accounting for 12 of the 15 phones with the largest values. It must be said though, that premium #Apple phones such as the #iPhone 7 and the recently released iPhone 8 are also here to be seen.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Microsoft's Share Price Tripled Under Satya Nadella

Five years ago, Satya Nadella took over as CEO at #Microsoft, following in the footsteps of Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. It wasnโ€™t an easy situation to come in for Nadella, considering that Microsoft had missed the transition to mobile devices, Windows 8 had flopped miserably and the PC market had started its decline, putting Microsoftโ€™s core business, Windows, into question.

Back in 2014, most people given the choice to invest $1,000 in either Microsoft or #Apple, probably would have invested in the latter, considering the huge success that Microsoftโ€™s old foe was having with its mobile devices, most importantly the iPhone. And yet, here we are, five years into Nadellaโ€™s tenure and Microsoft is not only the most valuable public company on the planet, it has also outperformed Apple over the past five years.
