In 1961, there were almost no Turks in the Federal Republic of Germany. This year, its authorities signed an intergovernmental agreement with Turkey to bring in a large contingent of guest workers - "Gastarbeiter". By 1974, 649,000 of them had passed. They were supposed to make GDP and leave. They didn't leave, on the contrary - they brought their families. After 1973, Germany tried to bring "guests" back to their homeland, offering Turks financial bonuses if they left. Ineffective. By 1990, the Turkish population in West Germany had increased to 1.6 million. They quickly applied for citizenship. In 1990, 4,000 Turks received it, and in 1999 it was over 100,000. Currently, there are officially 3 million Turks in Germany, unofficially twice as many. 1.6 million of them have German citizenship. In some districts of large cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, they constitute a significant part of the population. Turks are or were in the leadership of German parties (Greens, SPD). They are members of parliament and councilors. However, many of them have created a parallel society with their own mosques, shops, bars, sports clubs and gangs.
A 2017 survey in Germany received wide attention in which almost twice as many local Turks said they felt emotionally attached to Turkey as their homeland rather than to Germany.
