The Poles arrived in 1802. By 1803 80% were dead to disease, the French were defeated and Haitians were butchering all French and taking no prisoners. The Poles were running out of ammo and supplies, rebels were killing captured Polish soldiers.
They defected to the Haitians because the alternative was being captured and slaughtered by the Haitians
Jean-Jacques Dessalines was happy to have something he can could point to for salvaging British (who had an anti French blocade) and American relations. These were essential for his plan to continue export economy and in danger due to the whole white genocide thing he did
