Emails show that the universities monitor students' social media, then inform BAE Systems

Thirteen British universities held discussions with BAE Systems, Britain's largest arms manufacturer, about suppressing pro-Palestine protests on their campuses, according to a joint investigation by Liberty Investigates and Al Jazeera, published on 24 September.

Emails and internal documents obtained in the investigation revealed the universities plotting with the weapons firm to ramp up security against protesting students and present a united front against those demanding they cut ties with the company.

Six of the institutions – the universities of Manchester, Nottingham, Southampton, Birmingham, and Strathclyde, as well as Cranfield University – are classed by BAE as “strategic partners” and together pocket up to $20 million a year from the arms maker under funding agreements.

“When public universities take operational cues and security strategies from weapons manufacturers to suppress their own students, the boundary between higher education and corporate defense interests collapses,” said Gina Romero, the UN special rapporteur for peaceful assembly and association.

“This investigation reveals a troubling pattern: universities managing protest not as spaces of free inquiry, but as corporate risk to be mitigated for key financial sponsors,” Romero added.
